Crossroads Speedway upgrade!

Postby btaylor » Sat Jan 14, 2017 2:34 pm

Well I finally made enough room to do what I had wanted all along. I built myself a wood oval!
The old Artin has been very good to me, but the desire for a wood track was just to strong. Here are a few construction pics taken today.Image
Just a basic 16x6 table with 1/2" osb for the base. Then four sheets of 1/2" MDF went over that.Image A bit of routing went on.Image A few mistakes with the router, and a little heavy on the banking, but all is fixed now!Image Four inch lane spacing with a six inch gutter.Image and its just about time to paint and tape!Image More pics when I get some more done.

Looking good!! Nothing is quite like track building, and because it's an oval just makes it nicer.

Really nice looking start on your lay out Bob. Hope to start on mine soon. Keep posting the pictures Bob. Keep up the good work. I see that when you started routing you didn't start at the edge of the wood. You started in further. So,is that a plunge router? Thanks. Bob................

Bob, I did use my little Bosch plunge router on this. Made life a little easier on the corners. It is a light weight router though, and I wobbled off my straight guide a couple of times. Fixed it with the old bondo trick, and all is good now. I based my banking off what I had done on my Artin track. and found it to be a bit to aggressive for my tastes. I went back and shimmed the center to take out some of the drastic bank. should get paint this weekend, and maybe taped by mid week.

Thanks Mike! pretty basic oval really, but fun none the less. I got two coats of semi gloss latex on her at this point. One more coat and its on to taping! My trigger finger is getting itchy! :auto-driving: Image

Ok, I know its been explained a 1003 times or was it 1004 times, but could you show some detail on how you got the banking in with the sheet of MDF. I just watch a video of how to bend wood yesterday without using steam, but now I need to go get a band saw.
Nice looking track. :banana-dance:

Is that latex paint pretty much the norm that people use? Sure looks nice :banana-dance:

Harry best describes the banking in his thread on rebuilding his oval.

I went a little overboard on mine to begin with! I am still a bit more than most, but I like it. The MDF will flex a LOT without pinching the slots.
The latex seems to be the standard for wood tracks, I used it on both my plastic tracks as well, and had good results.
