Its Midget time again!

Postby btaylor » Fri Oct 19, 2018 12:19 pm

Those who know me, know I love Midget race cars. especially the early versions from the late 40's thru the 50's. I recently bought the 1/25 revel kit to knock out a mold. I never build less than four of a series, and usually far more than that. These will be on brass chassis's, using my own cast driver figure from the old monogram indy car, my own bodies from my mold, and my own tires all the way around. cars will be powered by slimcan motors, using 9/31 gear sets. I am planning on using the double flange aluminum set screw wheels and 1/8" axles. these wheels look as close to the dish wheel used on these cars as I could find. all will have full brass push bars and side bars, as well as steering linkages. This is what I have so far.

Well, I finished the first one, and went on and built a second. I am out of wheels right now, so the others will have to wait till my order comes in. Both of these are quite fast, and run way better than expected. I built them on the heavy side, and that really improves the handling as well as speed. I run them at ten volts, so they don't reach sonic speeds, but the traction from the added weight really pays off. I am also waiting on some three bar knockoffs to replace the nuts on the wheels.

Bob,
Will you share your chassis with us?
I have had one of these in a box, unassembled for several years.
I'm terrible at chassis fabrication.

Sorry Frank, I usually include a build pic. I guess I just got carried away and didn't get to it. anyway, here is a shot of the chassis I use. Its simple but effective.

As you can see in the picture, I use the side radius bars to hold the body on. I use small screws through the end of the bar. two will do it, one on each side.

Bob,
Thanks. Like I said, I am not much of a chassis builder. I hack up plastic chassis as I need them.
Ain't purdy but they seem to work for me.
