Project: 70' Camaro Stocker "Mello Yello" Completed

Postby ListerStormGT » Mon Apr 08, 2013 10:24 am

With the Cuda finished up it is time to start on a new project a 70" Camaro Stocker. Got the fenders hogged out this morning with CBD F1 15x8 wheels and PG 21115 tires. Now how do I want to paint it? I might like this better than the Cuda when its done.

Well, when you are working like a 1000hrs a week with only one day off you have to make as much progress as possible in one day to get anything finished...

Wait until you find out you are going to host this shootout :)

I mean, you and Bibbster. One oval, one road course.

No pressure.

So, we're talking about 1/32 Pony Cars (TransAm) that have been chopped to make dirt track Friday Night stockers?

Oval and road course ready, after market wheels and tires if wanted, and ? power, and ? drive gear. Is that more or less right? I'm looking through my parts boxes...

I finally decided on a paint scheme for the Camaro, I took the day off work today to get the paint done (I needed a day off anyway). :violin: I still need to bring the yellow down on the lower front valance but I hope to get the decals on later tonight. I will update with more pics once the decals are done.

Love the paint job on the Camaro stocker. I'm planning a red, white, and blue paint scheme on mine and would like more info about how to proceed.

What was the order of painting? Did you start with a primer layer? What did you use to mask off areas of the body? Any ideas on a plan to paint a resin body so it has red sides, white hood, and blue roof and trunk?

Also, are you buying or making your own decals?

slothead, I cheated a little on this one as it was a white kit and I just sanded the gloss coat off and then taped off the areas I wanted to keep white.

For yours since it is a resin body, I normally do a light sanding, then clean with Westley's bleach-white tire cleaner. After the body is clean and dry I would primer it and you will want to do a base coat of the white color you want, once dry tape off the body and paint the sides red, once dry tape off the sides and the the areas you want to keep white and paint the top blue.

For tape I use 1/4" green automotive masking tape like they use in auto body paint shops. The trick to get a clean edge is to do a few light coats and peel away the tape before the paint fully cures. I am no professional but that is how I would do the 3 step paint process if I were doing it. Look forward to seeing it when you start on it.
