Thanks, guys. My secret decal maker did a fantastic job on those decals, eh? I copied them from a 1920s painted ad in a an old magazine. I may have to dust off the the old ink jet and learn how he does it- like I need more skills to learn! All I know for sure is he printed it on white decal paper because I told him it was going on dark purple paint.
I used white primer and Testors Diamond Dust for an undercoat. The purple is Purple Licious- just one coat. Look out for the Diamond Dust. That is the hottest lacquer I have yet seem- it shrivelled and bubbled the primer after 24 hours under a lamp.
