Anyone recommend a good source for vintage crown gears? Thanks.

The current Parma 48 pitch crown gears are the old Cox crowns with a different color, and grade, of
plastic. I just color them with a sharpie. The Kemtron and K&B bevel gears that I used in the sixties
often show up at model car/slot car swap meets.

Specifically - Looking for a couple of crowns for Strombeckers - these are for the older plastic chassis axles (D-type Jags and Testa Rossa's) I'm getting 1/8" diameter micrometer reading on the smooth part of the axle.

Others - I don't even know about yet - will be as the needs arise. Been buying vintage cars and refurbing "em. Really enjoying it especially when I can get "em turning lap times close to my newer stock.

You might try a 24T steel Revell.
That's what fits in my Testa Rosa with the open frame motor.
I've got one if you need it and probably Strombecker gears too.

I believe COX and WELDUN gray crown gears are still available to hobby stores from REH Distributing in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Don't know for sure, it's been many years since I've placed an order with them. Check with your usual slot/hobby sources.

Should you not like the Parma pink, dye them another color using RIT fabric dye. Black & red both cover the pink well, but others, such as green, won't. It'll wear off where the teeth makes contact with a pinion, but you'll have a pretty looking gear. :lol:

Does the dying process affect the durability of the gears? -- Ernie

Dying can be done several ways with nylon gears or electrical sockets. Dye in water alone in the microwave for a minute is the easiest. Add some oils and the plastic can be lubed a bit. plastic can be porous ....overcook and they can get brittle. redye if the color looks bad. Drag timing systems require a very opaque black (to infared) for flags
