Carrera Classic "SCCA" Corvette

Postby HomeRacingWorld » Wed Oct 03, 2012 5:12 pm

This was one of those Stars & Stripes Vettes from a few years ago. They were in some sets and loose and I managed to pick up a couple. I always meant to make something a little more "period" out of one, but parts were slim pikins' back then.

But today things are different so it was time. I first radiused the entire chassis so it would not bind.

I used the MT Classic motor with Slot.it 27 tooth crown and 9 tooth pinion. Axle is 3/32nd Music wire. Decided to try Sloting Plus bearings in this one. VERY smooth, but bushings would have been fine.

Wheels are the new Slot Car Corner anodized gold 15x8 steely with Paul Gage 21105's on the rear. Used SCX NASCAR rubber up front.
Also used a Sloting Plus guide that bolted right in. I used this on the advice from Dickie at SCC, and he was right. It works great.\

I don't use ferrules on the ends of my wire, I tin it and insert directly into the top of the guide, then re-heat it and let it flow for a solid connection.

I soaked the body in 907 Alcohol and removed the decals. I then primed it with Testors gray and used Testors gloss black.

Nothing fancy, just a simple & of course fictional representation.

Decals are from Pioneer that came in the kits.

This was fun transforming a model that had been all but forgotten. Carrera could bring them back anytime as far as I am concerned.

Runs great too. It better with all this "bling" huh? But it fits right in with the other models we have been building.

Nice work there Boss!!

And to remind everyone..
These gold wheels are a Limited Edition. We only had so many made, and once they're gone, they're gone...

Innards aside, this is a great repaint job. I love the subject matter and wish that manufacturers would pump out similarly styled SCCA (and even dare I dream CSCC) goodies.

This is a reason to support Pioneer, because they put out cars of this type. I only wish they'd do some 1950's models, but the Pioneer wishlist is already a mile long!

Thanks all.

Well Goose, you just made a good post about the D Type Jag. Models like it, The Aston Martins, Maserati, Ferrari 166 were all cool models...but most did not like how they ran. The same was said about the original street cars too.

But if you look back, we did not have the slew of aftermarket parts we have today. These cars today would be a hackers (which is what I call myself when I butcher a car like I did with this Vette) dream.

This is why I am excited about the 289 Cobras and The Cheetahs. I am not much of a Cheetah guy...but it's a classic. With today's aftermarket toys there really isn't anything we can't tune to our liking.

Bibbster is not alone. There are quite a few of us smacking our foreheads and doing the Bart Simpson DOH! when we look at some of the cars we let go.

Veddy Nice!
Did you lower the body/ride height? I can't wait to see the GTO. I had actually forgot about that car until I saw the mention here. Like so many others have stated, I let 1 or 2 of those go as well and now wish that I hadn't. Wouldn't be something to see the Carrera Vette, Stangs, Camaro, GTO's, Cuda's all tuned and running well on the track together. These are all cars that stumped me back in my 'go fast and add more magnet' days that would probably be a blast to run with the MT/1 and some simple tuning.
Hell, throw the Aston Martin DB-5 in that list as well Another one I let go of and now wish I had

Lee and I were planning a duo build with that car back before my father's stroke. He probably had to go on without me. I was going to do a roadster version by cutting the roof off and fabricating a rear deck. These days, I'm not so ambitious.

Here is my latest Carrera GTO build. It is a Carrera GTO body on a Scalextric IRL chassis.

Boy does it really haul the mail!

Thanks!

Rusty(Ourwayband) schooled me in the use of the scaley IRL chassis from looking at what he did from cars I purchased off of him in the past.....

That chassis is cheap because the IRL cars can be found fairly reasonably and they run well and consist too.

Put a set of sillies on the rear and go to town!
