A very sad day indeed.

RIP...the only American driver to win a GP in a car of his own design. Truly one of the greats.

I drew a quick breath when I saw that email from AutoWeek magazine, immediately followed by sadness. AJ and Dan, my two favorite American drivers. Now one is gone.
I had the privilege of a handshake, autograph, and short conversation at least twice with the man. At Laguna Seca in 2003, he gladly signed my FORD issued exclusive autograph session ticket. It has a color photo of the Le Mans finish. I asked him to please leave room for AJ to sign, as I'm displaying the ticket with my GMP 1/12 scale, very limited edition die cast of the '67 Le Mans winning Mark IV they shared in victory that year. I also asked him to sign a 16x20" black and white photo that I had purchased from renowned auto racing photographer Jesse Alexander earlier that day. It's a great shot of Dan squinting into the sun through the windshield of a Shelby Cobra Daytona, taken at Sebring if memory serves.
Mr. Gurney also started (spontaneously) the traditional spraying of the champagne from the victory podium that day at Le Mans with AJ.
From the cars he developed, the races he drove masterfully in, to the Belgian GP victory driving a car of his own design, the man was an American automotive hero and icon.
My condolences to his wife Evi and the boys. He will be greatly missed by myself and anyone else who had the pleasure of knowing him. Remember that winning smile!
Rest in Peace, and Thank You, Mr. Gurney. -- Ernie
