On occasions such as this I think it makes sense to realize (rationalize?) that someone in your life probably meant to get you a great birthday gift, but forgot to or ran out of time. So why should you suffer for their lack of planning or organization? The solution is to go ahead and buy yourself a new slot car to make up for their oversight. You certainly deserve it and everyone will be happier in the end.
