Caution: Construction ahead

Postby turbokev » Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:58 pm

It's been 5 years since the demise of my last routed track.. Had a water leak in a bathroom
located on the floor above the track that I didn't notice for a couple weeks. Every time someone
used the sink, water would drip down on to the track, filling the slots and swelling the MDF.
By the time I noticed what was happening, it was a total loss. Really took the wind out of my sails
as I had put a lot of time, money and effort in to the layout. I took a break from slots for a while.

Lately, my kids who are now 10 and 7, have expressed an interest in slot cars and I've been taking
them to some of the local routed tracks like the one at Slot Car Corner and they have loved it.

When we left Slot Car Corner my youngest said "When are we going to build a track at our new house"?
and I told him it was going to take some work to clean out the 'scary side' of the basement and
make it nice enough to have a track.. He replied "Why don't we just go home and do it"?
So, that's what we did.. The kids worked for hours with me over the next few weekends to take
out trash, paint walls, paint the floor, put up paneling etc.. I was surprised at how much they
did without losing interest..

So here's the first construction update of the new track being built in our basement.
I like both oval and road course racing so I’ve decided to make another ‘Roval’ similar to
the track that got wrecked. This one will be 16 feet long by 7 feet wide at one end, narrowing
a bit at the other end. The big turn at the far end of the track is a constant radius, all
other turns will be varying and made using Lufs lexan strip. I like the way you can make
increasing and decreasing radius turns and have the cars follow a bit more of a racing line in
the corners..

So far I’ve got the table built and the 3/8 mdf cut to size. I’ve also made interchangeable
drop in sections for the front straight that will allow me to run it as an oval, or swap out a
small section and run it as a road course. I’ll install a reversing switch so the track can be run
clockwise or counterclockwise on the oval or the road course.

Here are a few pictures of what I’ve got so far.. I’m going to draw out the roadway for the
road course next, then it’s time to make some dust ~

Didn't take any pictures of the scary basement, this is after painting and cleaning:

Today I got the oval roadway penciled in..road course outline is next:

One of the things I liked about my old track was that we tried to even the lap times by extending the
infield road course lanes for the driver(s) that had the inside lane(s) advantage on the oval part of the track.

Here's what Dickie (nhdungeonracer) and I came up with on my old track..

Image

Image

It may not seem like much, but all 3 lanes ended up very close to having equal times.. I did lots of laps
with the same car in each lane and fast laps / average laps were within 1/10th of a second in each lane.

I want to do something similar on this new layout since I'm keeping it a simple flat track without a crossover bridge.

Here's what I came up with..

Image

The road course runs clockwise so as you come off the oval in to the infield you've got more than a 180 degree turn, then
you have the decreasing radius lefthander that leads on to the infield straight. The left hander will also gradually squeeze
down so by the time you are on the straight the lane spacing is just 2 inches on a 10 inch wide roadway.
at the end of that straight is the big left turn where the person in lane 4 (oval outside lane) has an easy U turn and
the other lanes go wider and wider to make that same turn. The little wiggle behind the pit building is normal lane spacing
so the person that went wide through the previous turn still has a shot at an inside lane pass leading out on to the
straight and finish line.

(I know, I know, I’m probably way overthinking this LOL)

I’ve already put this plan down on pencil on the MDF and I think it’s going to flow OK and be fun to race on..
Hope to start routing within the next few days~
