So when you set the depth for the gains I take it you have to allow for the 2 sided tape, and the thickness of the braid and go for a flush fit?

Yes, and the easiest way is to simply cut and route test slots.

You might see where there are different depths tested. Lay your braid with the tape in the gain and just go by "feel".
If you don't trust your fingers, lay a flat object such as a ruler, or I used my bubble level across the top.

Some people like slightly above flush. Myself I prefer flush. A lot of my cars were setup for tape which is about as flush as it gets so I stayed with it. I also prefer how easily the tires slide over a flush mount.

Cuts like that are called "fly cuts" by woodworkers. They are the easiest cuts to get perfect. Go for it, guys. Dave isn't glossing over anything- it really is easy. Look how clean his cuts are. I recommend a small router like the Bosche Pony. Super easy.

The new track looks great, Dave. It looks like your jalopies definitely hook up better on the new track surface and the additional volts to the motors has to be a big plus. Cool video, too! :text-bravo:

Shoreline Model Raceways has converted a couple of tracks from tape to braid, going to braid is like turning up the voltage a little. It feels like you get an extra volt or so. Actually you do get an extra volt or so. Braid has less resistance per foot and when you get further from the place where the power taps are that has a noticeable effect, especially if you run cars with more powerful motors.
