3D scanner.

Postby ddyke » Fri Aug 22, 2014 8:38 pm

Bought one BUT some things were missing. They said they would send them out next week. We will see. I will write a review once all the parts are here.

Does this mean that if you have a 3D scanner and a 3D printer, you can "clone" just about any slot car or slot car part you would like?

Marty, Allegedly but what I want to do is make things by hand and then make a 3D model. For example, I can make a part really large and scan it but then scale the file down. I have made about five bodies by hand but it was hard working in 1/32 on some parts. Make them in 1:12 and scale down to 1:32.

David, Makerbot's scanner. Bought it through Home Depot.

Could not get it to work on Vista. I am setting up a XP or 7.0 machine to run it.

I may buy the CNC stuff for my mill and lathe before I buy a 3D printer.

Very interested in how the scans work out, particularly the resolution. Thanks for sharing info.

I have been doing 3d modeling and fooling around with 3d printing and would like to see the quality and usability of the scans that you capture with your new machine.

I will watch this space.

I've looked at the same one, Dan. It's hard enough to get a detailed part from something modeled in 3D, getting one from a scan might be pretty tough. Now you're dealing with resolution limitations on two devices, as you know, and that can really compound the problems. But I've been looking at one of these scanners to try with the school's Affinia 3D printer, so I'm really curious to see your results. :)

If it gives me a the basic shape, Brian (Chet) and I can fix the rest. I mainly got it for work related stuff with my archeologist friend.

On complex shapes like on the fenders, I only have to make half the body because once it is scanned I can flip it to the opposite side and then both sides are absolutely identical. Join the two pieces together and putty the seam. Voila I have a body that is symmetrical. Slight differences can be taken care of by hand. The two front fenders would be identical. That is what is hard to do in carving. Making one was relatively easy but making the other identical but inverted was a bear.
