Shoreline Model Raceways NASCAR Class

The SMR NASCAR class has used stock Scalextric "black stripe" FC-130 motors for many years, but lately we noticed that the newest motors do not perform as well as the best examples of motors that were bought two years ago. The best motors that I have are good for 23K RPM, but we sorted through dozens of new motors and could not find a single one that was good for more than 20K. We thought that new racers especially would be handicapped, so we have switched to the Piranha motor as the spec motor for the NASCAR class.

I have found the same thing Rich. I had an old Mustang that I ran at Bullitt. The motor tacked around 23K now most are between 19-20K.

We (HOST) switched over to the Piranha motor a couple months ago. We did stay with requiring the 19mm spur gear.
We did get rid of the F1 type wheels though, and went with 15x8's all around and putting the tires back under the body. We're hoping by putting the tires back under it will provide better side by side racing and not have cars flying off as often because of the "open wheel" effect.

We ran a 600 lap race last night, a couple of the cars still had Scalextric motors. On the small oval they were almost as fast as cars with Piranha motors, but some of the guys had Scalextric motors good for 24K. We have never had problems with our NASCARs colliding because of the wheels sticking out. If we had switched to narrower wheels everyone would have had to buy new wheels and tires.

This needs to be clarified. Not all of us have Mabuchi motors that run 24K. Rich has motors that are that fast but not me. Now ask how he gets them that fast..... :naughty:

I simply tach the motors that I have bought and run the better ones. I have at least two Scalextric motors that tach at just over 23K. I have another half dozen motors that can do 22K. There are several people in my club that have cars with more top speed than mine, it seems logical to me that the motors in those would tach at 24K.
