What does your club race, and why?

Postby wanabgts » Wed May 22, 2019 10:56 am

So we are currently in discussion within my local club on the classes we will be running for next year for points. I find the discussion interesting and wanted to probe into what some other clubs may be racing.

Last year we raced Can Am, Classic Lemans, Scalextric GT3, and Classic 2. The racing in classic lemans and gt3 was very close, while classic 2 and can am had a huge disparity in lap times etc.

Here is a list of what we run on a regular basis....Let's see what you have and maybe we can all get some ideas! You may have to copy and paste in browser.

Looks like you guys keep busy tuning cars! We run 4 classes a year for points, and usually have 3 for fun classes each night as well.

Do you guys have limits on preparation, or is the sky the limit?

Of course we have rules! Nothing box stock, all no mag. We encourage racers to tune the cars to their driving ability. Pretty much just a motor specification. Other than that, let ‘me rip!

I'm also a racer at the same club and does anybody use or heard of using a break out rule for min lap time for a class and if so what type of race program do you use and what are the settings???

@docdoom: I think the Vancouver club does something like this. You set the minimum lap time to be the breakout....if you go faster, the software doesn't count the lap.

The group I race with has about 15 classes but there are probably half a dozen that are real favorites. All are run no mag, most allow silicone tires.
1) Fly Classics - Coupes
2) Fly Classics - Roadsters
- These are supposed to be stock with normal Fly tuning allowed (solid front axle, superglue bushings, true wheels). It's 18K motors, so some cars have replacement motors and a couple have replacement rear wheels but for the most part they are stock 18K no mag cars.
3) Slot.it Group C - just what it says, but orange can only.
4) Cobras and Cheetahs - this is a builder class, any mod allowed but must be a Cobra or Cheetah body. I run a Monogram Snap Tite Cobra with a 3D printed chassis carrying a slot.it orange can sidewinder pod.
5) GT cars Post 1990 - Basically a Slot.it/NSR class for the Nissan/McLaren/F40 although a modified Saleen and a Fly Marcos sporting a slot.it chassis have been known to appear......
6) GT Cars Post 1990 Non-Slot.it - for those of us that want to mod a Ninco F-50 body with a 3D printed podded chassis, for example.....
7) TransAm - stock tires, no mag. Minimal tuning, and run at 10V.
8) LMP-1: Pre-1990 bodies, any mod, LeMans bodies/liveries
9) LMP-2: Alfa/Ferrari: Slot.it Alfa/312PB/Matra, Sloter 312PB.
10) LMP-3: Modern LMP cars (mostly Slot.it) -one of the lesser run classes.
11) CanAm - Wide open, must be a Can-Am 66-74 body. Mostly Slot.it cars. None of us have bought TS.
12) F1 Pre 1980 - Scalex classic F1 cars - we allow silicone tires and run at 10V.
13) Pre 1960 sports cars - Any pre-1960 sports car: lots of Ninco Classics, 3D printed Porsche 356s, etc. Stock tires and 10V. This class is a hoot and always a favorite.
14) Group 5: Sideways Gr 5 cars, any mod.... although I have been noodling on a Carrera Monza........this is a very fast class.
15) 1960 - 1970s front motored GT cars - Fly Ferrari 365, etc. 18K motors
16) Carrera GT3s - Must be stock Carrera except for Quick Slicks silicone tires. A variety of cars, all pretty even, and inexpensive.

We don't race for points though...it's all about having fun. The last couple weeks we have run Fly classics.....pick a fast car, and pick a slow car....race fast vs fast and slow vs slow. They seem to work out that way....fast cars are 11.8 - 12.0, slow cars are 12.4 - 12.7 lap times. Having evenly matched cars makes the racing more enjoyable for us.....
Fly Classics, 50s sports cars, classic F1s, LeMans, CanAm......those are the primary favorites....

Why?
Mostly it's about the cars we all like (or in the case of the Carreras, were willing to buy) and enjoy racing.

Wow some flash race programmes you guys have there. In New Plymouth, New Zealand we have 7 fairly basic classes. Most based around our former National rules. I would certainly like to see some different ones but the majority rules. Instead I do proxy racing to meet my other asperations.

Depending on how many turn up (we are a small club) we try to race all classes each race day but usually not less than 5. Each is raced through a simple round robin system. Slot-it N22 is the tyre of choice for all modified classes.

Classes raced are as follows:

1. Standard Scaly GT
2. Aussie V8 with all original parts including motor and gears but a different guide, rear axle and ali wheels/any tyres are allowed. Anything else is allowed as long as exterior of body remains unchanged - e.g. no cutting up guards, widening body.
3. Standard Slot-it Group C with grub screws and up-graded tyres allowed.
4. Standard Slot-it Group C chassis with a clear body appropriately painted but otherwise as per above GC class.
5. Group 5 saloons - any modifications allowed as long as exterior of body unchanged.
6. Muscle car - any modifications allowed as long as exterior of body and chassis unchanged.
7. Open GT - any modifications allowed as long as exterior of body unchanged.

I'm not a club racer but enjoy reading what folks are doing. In addition to classes being run, what voltage settings are being used? And, is it a constant setting or does it vary for different classes of cars?

Our small group here in DeBary basically run three classes. Nascar, was Carrera classics but we have switched to the new Scalextric Monte Carlos and hopefully Thunderbirds. Scalextric trans Ams, and Scalextric GT3. Occasionally we run Slot.it group C cars.

We run 10v on everything but the fast 1/24 cars. We run 9v on those.

Our Club in the UK runs four classes per year, and odd specials on when necessary.
1) BTCC....Two classes within this Group. Class 1 ...Standard Scalextric cars complete with original rubber.Class 2 modified with up to 21.5K motors.
2) 70's F1 Nonoslot cars- Standard cars (Lexan bodies, metal chassis), very fast close racing
3) Pre 93 Endurance cars....Modified up to 23K motors.
4) Modern LMP/GT ...Modified unrestricted motors.( Most use various NSR motors)
All run at 13.4 Volts.

Here are the classes that Shoreline Model Raceways runs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rYMaE0 ... sp=sharing
Our tracks are wood, except for one Carrera oval, we run at 10 volts and traction magnets are not allowed. We started out running on Scalextric Sport track and used large traction magnets. Scalextric NASCARS, Trans-Ams and generic open wheelers were the classes. The cars were never stock, Slot.it axles, wheels, tires and gears were used. Eventually we moved the traction magnets forward to get a more realistic driving car and later switched to wood tracks where traction magnets were just extra weights. We stuck with the NASCARs, we dropped the generic open wheel cars in favor of the Scalextric Dalarras and introduced a new Sports Car class. Most of the Sports Cars ended up with a Slot.it HRS chassis underneath, now a few cars have a 3D printed chassis. We started an Enduro class for modern prototype type cars and for a time we had a class just for Racer DPs. Eventually some of the Racer DPs were run in the Enduro Class. The Dallara open wheel cars got phased out in favor of the LeMans class for vintage prototypes. The LeMans class was adapted from the rules of a New York club that we hoped to have joint races with and that morphed into our present Classic Prototype class with minor changes. The '55 Chevy class originally was for cars using an Artin NASCAR chassis, I guess that the guys thought that those were too tame and in any case the chassis shortly became hard to find, so now the cars use a Slot.it HRS chassis and a 21.5K motor. Eventually the '55 Chevy bodies went out of production, so we allowed other similar bodies and changed the name of the class to Sportsman. Our newest class was for nearly stock Carrera cars and used the rules from another club in our area. With that class we ran into a problem with the motors because newer Carrera motors were not as powerful as many of the older ones. For that reason we switched to using Piranha motors, but we may soon change to something with a little less power.
As time goes by classes might come and go or just mutate into something else. A few years ago we started to run IROC style races once in a while, now we have one every week. The IROC cars stay with their lanes and lane rotations are used so every racer runs the same cars in the same lanes. The cars might be supplied by the track owners and there are also three sets of club owned cars.
