New Track

Well.
I finally got the kid moved out, the room cleaned out, and made some time to work on the new track. The first one was 8x16 3 lane routed.
Image
I still have it but since it's a summer only track, I wanted something inside.

The room is 10 x 12 so I toyed with 9 x 10 but the navigation was just troublesome, even with two lanes. As much as I love having three lanes, they just don't get used. So I went with two lanes, and a 7.5 x 9 table.
Image

So the table is 1/2" plywood and 2x2 framing and legs. One end is screwed to the wall so it's pretty sturdy. The track is 1/2" MDF routed with the strips. I went with 4" spacing so I can run my vintage 1/24 cars as well. I decided on a homage to Road America as it is one of my favorites and it was reasonable for the table size in 2 lanes. Finally got it assembled today and the joints and screws filled. So I took a break to share it.

I am going to go with copper tape for now, braid may be in the future if budget allows and the club runs it enough. Power is a 10A 14V supply I got for $5 at an estate sale, with adjustable voltage at each driver's station.
I don’t have an official length yet but should be around 35 ft or so.

Paul - AWESOME!!! I love RA and it is one of my favorite courses as well! Perfect layout for the table size you have.

Now, let's talk landscaping...you know that makes me happy!

Can't wait to come up and see it!

David....
Yes, by all means. This track is going to be my first landscaped track so I will be learing as I go.
Still have a ways to go though. Got the slots painted last night and will be doing the track surface later today. Then tape and wiring and drivers stations to make sure it will run...

Then maybe start some landscaping, but there are lots of more steps.....
I have to build the light bridge and get timing and race management, adjustable power at the stations, proper timing and scoring display, etc etc.

Nothing wrong with using tape. Maybe it doesn't sound high tech, but it lasts a long time, a long time! It's a lot cheaper and a lot quicker to get going. If you have to tear it down, you aren't wasting near as much money.

I have used tape on both of my tracks so far and neither have been a problem.
So I am comfortable that it will be fine.

Got the first coat of paint on today, may get it sanded and the second coat tonight if I have time. Hopefully it will be running by next weekend.

Made some progress last week.
Got the slots painted:

And got three coats on the road surface:

Tape got here last night and had to help MNFordGuy tonight. But it should be up and running this weekend with timing and scoring to follow, and then starting on the scenery.

Looking very good sir, coming right along. Will be a great drivers track.

So either you make Steve a permanent turn marshal...or build very strong fences

Yeah, Stoner is gonna have to learn to stay on the track, its a drop to the floor from the top of the hill though nothing like Luf's Targa or even racer1h's track. And I need to protect the sheetrock, I guess......

Yes, it's not built for flat out speed,it's built to be a driver's track. What looks like a straight on the back side is actually a long sweeper so 21K motors will be more than enough and maybe even too much; we will see (hopefully this weekend).

Now the whole "dents in the wall"? Oh, I won't argue that.

Remember...those curves are the hard part.
