Not all O Scale buildings will work. In fact, if you are plan on using them right up front with 1/32 figures it can be tricky. That being said, it is possible. What you need to do is to start w/an O Scale structure that has about 3 1/2" between each floor. That works out to about 9' in 1/32 Scale. A bit small for a commercial structure such as this one, but doable.

The first floor is most important because that's where your doors will be. If needed, add a bit of "foundation" to the entire base of the structure to "raise" it. This building was tall enough, but the doors were too small so I cut them out & kitbashed a new set using a pair of Tichy O Scale doors as a starting point. Using strip styrene & a little cutting & fitting I "stretched" the doors a bit to make them taller. I keep a 1/32 figure close by so I can kind of eyeball it. Probably not too close if this was really scrutinized but close enough for my purposes.

I added a "drop shadow" to the Route 66 sign using a black Sharpie, added a few more signs & the doors & widows.

Wow, just been browsing through your thread. Amazing stuff, all of it.
We used to have IGA here in NZ when I was a kid and whatever happened to Wrigleys Spearmint? I was at the supermarket only half an hour ago and noticed 2 types of PK and Juicyfruit but no Spearmint and that was always my favourite.

Thanks, glad you guys dig it!

I worked on the layout for a bit today. I added some cracks and tar patching to some of the track. I simply used black craft acrylic paint. Oddly enough it shows up pretty well on the black track. The trick is to making it look real is to have some variety & to not overdo it.

A rough placement of the buildings. The buildings all need to be "planted" with foundations. Much more detail will be added & I'll "dirty up" that pure black Main St.

Here are some pics of the layout for those who have not dug through all of the pages of this thread. : )

The latest structure. This was entirely scratchbuilt, from the brick walls to the facade & signs for the front of the building. The odd triangle shape is so it fits where I need it to. Questions?

Absolutely incredible work... :music-rockout:

I thought that the Texaco station was my favourite, but as I progressed through the pages, I'm left kinda numb...

I have no favourite, as I love what you've done with all the buildings you created...

My hat's off to ya...

All the best...

Ron...

You got a contact for the Rocket Motel downtowndeco?

I think I might have to book in for a few days to take a closer look. Just keeps getting better ... if that's possible.

File this under "Do as I say and not as I do..."

When I first started this layout it wasn't really meant to be permanent, I just put a couple of pieces of old 4' x 8' hardboard on a few sawhorses & I figured if I ever had to move the layout I'd just take off the "top" & then reposition it after I moved the sawhorses. I put sliders under the feet to help it slide if I needed to do maintenance or work on scenery. It kind of sort of slid forward or backwards a few feet but really, it was a huge pain in the rear to move.

I finally had enough of that hassle so I built 2 proper "frames" with legs for the pieces of hardboard & slid them underneath the original hardboard sheets. I won't bore you with all of the details but let's just say I can move the whole 16' layout with one hand now. The frame & wheels are the best improvement I've made on the layout to date, but honestly, it should have been the first thing I did. Bad, bad layout builder. : )

Layout w/original sawhorses.

I built two of these...

... and slid them under the two halves of the layout...

...then bolted the two halves back together. It works!

I added a new sign & some extra detail to behind the old Texaco Station. I finally found a use for all of those old tires.I still need to age it with chalks a bit.The old truck is something from my 1/35 military scrapbox.
