HRW Can-Am proxy!

All -
Just a quick update on the action!

Z-carfan made the road trip in yesterday to join APalmer, Slot Therapist, myself - plus a good number of local volunteers, to officially kick off the first race of the HRW CanAm proxy!
:banana-dance:
Action started with a little warm up / acquaintance, followed directly with Mike (Z-carfan) and local racer Shaun Steed running qualifying. The session used the white (lane 2) and purple (lane 7) lanes giving a good representation of each cars capabilities. Each car was run for 10 laps, with the best lap from each lane being added together to determine qualifying position. (driver's notes regarding each car will be part of the qualifying results)

After qualifying, the cars were staged in qualifying order, minor issues noted from the qualifying addressed, and the action commenced!
Due to some time constraints and the shear size of the field, we made a slight change to our normal format to insure that we were able to get the entire race completed in the time alloted.
Instead of running 2 minutes per lane as has typically been our norm - we switched to 1 minute per lane for the race rotation.
With utilizing six lanes for the race, this still provided six minutes run time with each of the cars during the race and allowed everything to fit everyone's availability / schedules. :D

Pictures, feedback, results etc will follow - so please stay tuned for more! :D

I wanted to give a little review of my weekend at the Can-Am proxy, enjoy. :twocents-mytwocents:

After chatting with Todd I decided to drive up to Canton (from Galena, Oh) to try my hand at driving on a large track and assist with running the proxy.
This was my first time running 1/32 on a larger track like the one at MMW.

My impressions:

Wow, that was a ton of fun!!!!
The track was larger than I thought and the grip levels made it more of a challenge that I expected. After several practice laps with my car and then a round with the other entrants, we ran quali.
Quali was a great way to learn each car and compare their abilities with 2 different drivers. (I will be curious how my notes compare to Shawn's).

Each car requires a different approach to tackle this monster track. Some cars I could nail the throttle right out of a corner, some I had to roll the power on slowly. (Todd has my notes for each of the cars).

Brakes.... Well, some have them, some don't. dreinecke, I apologize for forcibly removing the Nissan's wing (and head..) as I realized that fact too late!
Feel free to abuse my Nissan when it shows up at the Divide. :scared-eek:

Weight balance, well this is an important area, especially for this track. On my test track (flat latex) I could power slide and get smooth acceleration out of a corner. I felt I had a good amount of weight in the nose. On the MMW track which has years of rubber, silicone and or urethane laid down, when I hit the throttle hard, the acceleration would almost pull the guide out of the slot! Or at least the front would 'hop' as I applied the power. (other cars were MUCH better at this than mine).

Builds - WOW again! You guys have some great cars and some of the detail work and thought put into them were simply amazing! While we didn't do a concours, there were a fleet of beautiful cars last weekend and I was honored to give them a run.

I'd like to thank Todd and his crew for welcoming me in and making me feel like part of the crew. I even enjoyed a steak dinner at the local Texas Road house afterwards with them which was great fun. I only wish I was closer (about 2 hours) to come up and run on Wednesdays.

In addition, while I did not get to talk with him too much, I'd like to thank Mark of Mark's Model World for hosting (sorry we took longer than we thought). I really enjoyed the track and comradery with everyone, it was a friendly atmosphere and one great for the kids to come up and enjoy.

Being right down the street from the Football Hall of Fame, if your going through Canton, stop by and run some laps!

Mike
Thanks for the review
Sounds as though it could be very interesting when cars go to tracks with less grip...and now for a moment of respect for David's drivers mishap.
The results should be interesting

Mike -
Thank you for coming up to join us Sunday - it was great to race with another fellow HRW member! :D

I am still working on compiling results/pictures/etc on this end - but here is at least a little bit to help tide everyone over!

Following is a compilation of both the "fast lap" qualifying times and the notes from Mike (Z-Carfan) and local racer Shaun Steed coming out of the qualifying session. :)

Image

As an interesting bit of trivia, there were six cars that logged "fast laps" during the race the were quicker than the "fast laps" logged during qualifying - indicating that not all of these cars are fully settled in yet...
This ought to make for a great series!

Interesting, the time differential between white lane and purple lane. :o

FYI folks, I was running the white lane. :scared-eek: :auto-driving: :auto-checkeredflag:

Shawn is a regular at the track and it was my first run. Good to know that I have room to improve. ;)

I'm very happy just to be taking part - I'll take 15th on the grid! It could be better - but for the thrash I had to get there - I'll take it!

Picking up the nose eh.........I was just thinking - my car is like a Kardashain - good looking and a little too much weight in the rear! Though - I guess all that is in the eye of the beholder as it were..... Maybe it's too light in the front..... :? I better stop there.....

Thanks for running/driving this event!

Thanks for the update. Light front end.

I have too many cars in too many proxies. Forgot my number. Issue wasn't light front end but gear. Maybe it will work out better on the shorter tracks.

" like a Kardashain - good looking and a little too much weight in the rear! "

Now there's an 'under'statement. That K car will never oversteer!

Thanks for running the quali and posting the results, Todd and Mike! Pleased with the #48 and really surprised to see the #59 where it is; it's a high-rider in the rear for sure - clears a 3/32 axle and then some ......!

Kardashians....... am I in an HRW proxy or is this a reality TV show? Should I be thinking balloon-fendered Ferrari Testa Rossa, or what.......??

Good to see a Shadow on the grid; one of the most unique slot cars ever developed! :text-bravo:

Thanks very much Mike - very kind words. and........you live right down the road from Mid-Ohio...... I know that because I've driven from the airport in Columbus to Lexington so many times - I know that name in your profile - Galena.... no idea where it is - but it must be close!

And thank you Allan!

OK - so it's now official thanks to Bob - the secret project name for my car - is "K-car". Just..... Dressed in orange... Same thing - but orange.
