That sounds interesting, but the race would have all Wasps, as I doubt any other cars are available, bodies, or enough details to scratch build it.

Why not expand the theme to any car from the beginning to 1940 or something like that. There might be more choices.

I don't know... The cars looked very similar in those days when the first one was run. You might be able to form a base unit of body parts, and rearrange as required. The wheels are going to be the tough part. Maybe a resin casting to fit the Pendleslot PPVR01 23" wheels for wood spokes, and mix in a few that have wire wheels using the Pendle PP-PEW03. Pendle makes a nice tire for these wheels, too.

There would be 40 cars, and aside from the Wasp (supposed to be the first rear view mirror, but it wasn't), the rest could be modelled using Miller front caps, and a variety of flat radiator grills. Most had a simple round tank mounted high at the rear, which gives you room to stuff chassis in underneath. Its 40 cars, but it could be done. You might be able to design a common chassis, that would ease things a lot..

Believe it or not, me, of all people, was thinking about it as a scratch-builders proxy. Chassis, body, the whole thing. Good ideas about the shared parts, though. There were some very cool cars back in the day. Check out the bottom of this link for a list of the cars that ran in the first race in 1911.

A thin insert wheel with a purpose-cast "wooden spoke" insert might work.

I think it could be done, though how many years it might take to get a field of these things might be a problem. We aren't getting any younger, eh?

I wonder if there are 3D print files out there for any of these cars, or blueprint style drawings that could be used. Probably just for the Wasp.

Time to do some internet research.

Now where to come up with large double flange wheels....

I know a 3DP wizard named "Matt".......................maybe changing gearz would be interested in taking a look at this wheel issue................. if there's enough interest, of course..........

The 3D wooden spoked wheels would be the ticket, but they would have to be done in a plastic that was not brittle, formed of durable plastic with hubs that could be pressed and glued. The rest of the car could easily be scratch built. O rings would make good tires. They could be ground flat and then recast to make urethanes. A garden hose O ring might be just the right size.

Since the motor would probably have to hang under the chassis for gear alignment, the hood and seats and back deck could probably be made out of styrene or even balsa wood. The frame could be built with rectangular brass tubing.

It is good to see some pics being posted. Keep them coming. Straight on side views would be helpful as well.

I love a challenge, let's make it happen.

This just in...
Do you have old 1/32nd Highway Pioneers models laying around in the parts bin? The wheels will sand down to an exact fit in the big, thin Pendles wheels. The set I'm using is from a 1910 Cadillac. Good place to scavenge body parts, too.

Electronics Goldmine and All Electronics have lots of robot motors that come in all sizes. I'm even thinking about a chain drive!
