Some thoughts about the Michigan 24 held at Clover Leaf Raceway March 28 - 30, 2014:
Thank you to Mike Stott and his wife for opening their home up to 30 racers who participated in this amazing event.
Thank you to Mike, Art, Dave, Paul and everyone else involved with the planning and execution of this event. Truly a top notch event - very well run and a LOT of fun for everyone who participated.
Thanks to Dave's daughter for the home cooked breakfast Sunday morning - it was delicious!
A big thumbs up to Rob for organizing the collection for a very worthwhile charity. Another thumbs up for all the racers who donated. Rob will manage similar charitable donations at future Michigan 24's!
Thank you Paul for designing the event poster - you did an incredible job. The poster will be prominently displayed at Area 51 Raceway for everyone to see.
A tip of the hat to the Hazzard Boys (Atlanta team) for making the long trek to Michigan. Despite some early car problems, you hung in there and finished strong. We hope to see you again next year!
Kudos to Team Cincinnati for a much better showing this year! Despite some motor issues early on, the car handled very well. It was great to see you all again.
Kudos also to Team Dum-Dum's on your second place finish. A strong car and some very good racers - it was great to see you all again!
Kudos to the CanAm Team - despite several mechanical problems, you hung in there and never gave up.
Thank you to Mark for sharing some tips with his controller grip - rest assured I'll be giving the tips a try.
Thank you to Paul (Clover Leaf Racing) and Eric (Cincinnati Slots) who raced on either side of me throughout the event. You are both excellent racers who are very courteous as well!
Thank you to Don and Diane for documenting this great event! I know I speak for all of the race participants (and many non-participants as well) when I say we anxiously looking forward to the video and pictures of the event! I would also like to thank you for answering my lighting related questions!
Thank you Mike for being such a good sport wearing your "special" pants! Deep down I think a lot of the participants: a) wished they had a pair, and b) wished they had the cojones to wear them... :-)
Thank you to Art's son for the laser engraved event placard's participants will proudly display on their slot boxes. They look great!
A very special thank you to Smokeio for building such an incredible race car. I am very fortunate (some might argue unfortunate...) to spend 24 hours each year riding out and back to/from the Michigan 24 with you (and to race with you on a regular basis). Your passion for all things slot car racing is contagious and your creativity knows no bounds. You are a true ambassador for this great hobby and a great friend!
Thank you Dickie for working with me (for the 4th year...) to retrain my brain to drive the infield section of the track correctly. You'd think after driving 20,000+ laps on this track I'd have it down by now (maybe next year?)...
Thank you to my teammates (Christian, Dickie, Georges and Mike) - it is always great to race with you at this event! Georges - I am working on some new pants for our SCC race uniforms... :-)
It's amazing to see how this event has grown in the four short years it has been in existence. Slot racers from around the world are familiar with this event and follow updates as the event progresses. Mike and his team have some ideas to improve coverage during future events.
While the racing on the track is world class, the camaraderie at this event has to be experienced firsthand to be believed!! It is this camaraderie that is at the heart of this event and why this event is so special. Everyone is racing hard but also having a LOT of fun! Throughout the Friday practice session and the actual 24 hour race, you'd be hard pressed to find one second (no exaggeration) when there isn't some friendly bench racing, some friendly banter or some laughter amongst the participants (usually all three of these things at once...). In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter where you finish in a heat or where your team finishes for the overall event. What does matter are the lifelong friendships that are made at the Michigan 24. It is these friendships that mean FAR more than winning a trophy or setting a world record.
Can't wait for the 5th Michigan 24 next year!! Until then, be safe my friends!
