Welcome back! I came back a while ago and was also surprised by some of the changes. The hobby is still great fun though!
If you have enough parts to build the layout you want, Artin is still a great track. We have two guys up here running Artin tracks. I still like the way it runs more than Scalextric. Also, it seems to hold up quite well with the stainless rails.
One thing I have noticed is that the surviving brands all seem to run fairly well out of the box. The newer Scalextric stuff can be a bit touchy, but all of my Carreras, Slot.Its, NSRs and the like seem to work well right out of the package. They will still respond well to a good tuning, but you can at least make decent laps without having to re engineer the whole car like you had to with Fly and SCX cars.
