What's the opinions on this?

I don't think there would be much tuning required. As our old buddy Jack always said this isn't rocket science.

Do you think you car will be so loose without the wing you can't keep it on the track? If that's what you think, then you think the wing makes a big difference. I don't really think it matters at all on 1/32 cars with magnets and home tracks 12-20 foot long. I actually think the magnet, tires and weight are the big variables. The wing means nothing.

I've run with some guys using Sprint car bodies on Sprint Plus chassis with Piranha motors on a small oval (14' end to end).
These have lexan bodies on brass chassis. And we use lightweight lexan wings on them.
As a corner marshall set up on the outside of the corner, you do feel a breeze from them when a group of them go past.
These cars are definitely faster with the wings than without.

As for GT and LMP cars like those from Scalextric, Fly, Carrera, etc, I personally don't think wings give you an advantage. The weight of the plastic wing up high is counter productive (IMHO-no actual proof).
That being said, the clubs I race with generally require everyone to have to wing in place. After all, we are racing "scale" cars... :D

Winged sprints, brass chassis on an oval compared to plastic rtr cars, kind of like apples and oranges.

Obviously on wing cars and lexan sprints air foils make a difference. I still say 1/32 plastic cars it means nothing, I don't really think a gram makes much difference. Decals weigh nearly that much, so does an extra coat of clear finish.

Try this MattB. Take the magnets out of your cars first off. Then tape a gram of weight to the top of the body on the back of the car. Run it as fast as you can. Now take the weight off, run it as fast as you can. Get back to us with your findings.

I don't run any magnet cars, we run 1/24 1960's style brass chassis cars. I can give you this comparison between wing and non wing cars. The Cox Chaparral 2E actually has a working spoiler that flips up on braking and lays flat on acceleration. It is a neat car, but it runs better with the wing removed.

If it's a fast track, like a big oval, then yes a wing will provide downforce in the corners where you need it. Simple enough.
Going slow doesn't really have any affect on aero.

As I go thru this thread, I'm not sure why we still discussing this. I missed your above post where you stated you did tests with wing and without and your cars were faster with the wings on. I hadn't read that post before. It appears you answered your own question. You can tell the friend that you asked this question for that where you race cars are faster with wings on, end of discussion. You have your results.

Not many other opinions or results, so evidently nobody else cares one way or the other. I like all this kind of discussion.

The first post at the top of this page is a timed test with and without wings and seems to settle the issue that wings are much faster. Testers results, not mine. I thought that was your post eagle.

Back to wings, I wonder how a chicken can flap his wings it they are boneless.
