track lighting

Postby oldtymer » Tue Jun 18, 2013 7:21 pm

Just built a new Carrera Digital layout . I built a replica of a road course in Spain . Its on a 18x8 table and has 80ft of track . Does anyone have any ideas for lighting around this type of layout for night racing ? For example : tower lighting , pole lighting or any linear lighting around the outside .

I'll defer to Rich to describe how he made the pole lights (I've "seen" Rich's pole lights - they are very nice). The lights in the first picture are flexible LED light strips - they come in various colors and typically sold by the foot or in 5 meter (approx. 16 ft.) lengths. Do a Google search on "LED light strips" to find them. They come in various colors and "shades" of white (e.g. warm, daylight, bright, etc.). The strips are designed to be cut if desired - they are marked every 2 or 3 inches to show you where to cut. In Rich's picture, the driver's stations are to the left - the lights were installed so they would not shine directly into the driver's eyes (i.e. the lights all face to the "right" or away from the drivers stations). The strips come with a self-adhesive strip that makes installation very easy - just peel away the backing and press in place.

Wiring is easy too - you can buy special prewired "dongles" that slide over the edge of the strip and lock in place or just solder a couple of wires at designated points along the strip. Connect to a 12VDC power source and you're in business. Be sure to get lights designed for 12V.

Hope this helps.

...any additional pix of the first track? Perhaps with lights on (or not) from different angles. It's a nice track!

Thanks
