If you simply wish to build a scratch built car then OK but as slot car racers and F1 teams know designing and making a chassis is one thing. Designing one that is quick is a completely different proposition.

I've gravitated towards RTR cars because of their appearances, the newer bodies are as detailed as diecast collector cars. But, performance wise it's hard to beat a brass chassis designed for the car it's under. Hopefully, 3D printed chassis will become a middle ground between stock plastic chassis and more complex scratch built brass ones many hobbyists aren't ready to take on. How great it would be to be able to order a chassis sized for a given body and add your personal tuning skills from there. Maybe a bit more cost, but also more choices.

I've been making 3D printed chassis since 2011 (and designing parts using the process for more than 10 years longer), I use Nylon made by the SLS (laser sinter) process which is incredibly tough and very resilient to a motor's heat. But new materials and processes are coming out all the time, it's an interesting thing to see develop.

I've recently done a new front end for the popular PCS32 chassis, it's got steering but as there's no tooling needed I've been able to design four different widths to suit almost any car. As builders use different diameter wheels I've also made the guide blade holder to sit at different heights.

The whole thing weighs a little less than a solid front axle; the nylon is very light and the stub axles are aircraft grade aluminum






Will it win you a race? I've no idea as I'm not a racer, but it does make things look more realistic and wouldn't have been economically possible without 3D printing.

Just another option for the would-be builder and keeps showing how good we have it these days.

I got my Shapeways chassis for the Fly Ferrari 512 that accepts a slot.it motor pod late last week. I will be going down to my track today to set it up. The chassis looks very sturdy and I am hoping it will be durable enough to take the abuse that slot cars normally endure.
