Can-Am Proxy Series for 2018?

Can-Am Proxy Series for 2018?

Postby Audi1 » Tue Dec 26, 2017 8:35 pm

Being that it's the end of the year, I was doing a little noodling about cars that I like to build and race and that don't' seem to get much action on the proxy circuit nowadays. The two that stand out most in my mind are the Can-Am cars and the Group C cars.

As a first step, I thought I'd ask the racers and modelers here if there's any interest in having a proxy series built around the old Group 7 Can-Am cars; the ones that raced in the 1966-74 era; Lolas, McLarens, Porsches, Chaparrals, Shadows, etc. If there is, then let me know and we can start looking more closely at it. 1/32 scale, plastic or 3D bodies, open chassis; maybe 22k rpm motor limit, open gearing, podded or non-podded, rubber or urethane tires, etc. No details at this point, just some ideas. Maybe 5 races in the US and 5 in Canada; to stick at least a little with the original idea behind the series when it began in the mid-'60's.

Any interest?

Um... YES! Loved the last Can-Am proxy I was in. Would be into building another.

Absolutely interested. My favorite cars.

If you went back a couple of years you would catch the earlier chaparrals(2A) and the Lotus 30 and 40.

I am interested !!

PS Would be nice to see rules constructed that would not result in a full field of Tslot T70's.

Yes, correct but it's the ONLY way I can run with in a 1/2 second of your Tslot70. Maybe a Jedi Grand Master class, Knight class and a Padawan class for beginners and a race within the race. As a Jedi Knight, (2 steps below a Grand Master) I now have a couple of Padawans trying proxy racing that I'm bring along. Sorry for the Star Wars references, I had a house full of teenagers talking Star Wars for for the past few holidays.

OK, some interest and some issues to deal with (TS Lola T70). Here's a list of the cars that ran in the '66-'74 timeframe; all the way from the T70's to the 917/30's. Some fun cars in there and some great racing names to remember, too!

Let's give it a little more thought. Maybe limit to 6 races; 4 in the US and 2 in Canada, like the original 1966 series; and try to get them done in a short timeframe (run the US races, then the Canadian races, or vice versa) to keep the momentum and enthusiasm high. Maybe limit to 30 cars; which is usually a very workable number for the host tracks. I'm open to other ideas, so let me know what you're thinking.

Thanks for all the Info Allan. I never knew a 911 RSR ran the Can Am. I know the Gulf 917's did when the logistics worked out for them, but was unaware of any 911s.

Personally I wish it went back a few years as the Chaparral 2C and Lotus 40 are interesting cars, but by 1966 nobody was running them.

However in the era you have identified I could run a Ferrari 350 and the Porsche 911 RSR and I would be a happy camper. I have resin shells for both of these, and only need to build a chassis or two.

I also like the idea of a shorter series. 6-8 tracks would be good and the cars wouldn't be away so long. I would still feel I am getting my moneys worth for the cost of postage and entry fee.

I really hope this comes to pass, and you can count on me for a couple of cars. #19, #20.
Cheers

Allan,

I’m certainly onboard for a Can-Am proxy. I would however also like to this opened up to run from 1964 to 1974. As Dan touched on, there were some really iconic cars that ran in ‘64 and ‘65 as in the first of the rear engine Chaparrals, Lotus 30 - 40, Mclaren M1A, etc... Also, how about allowing a couple extra Ks for FF slim cans over the 130s and 180s?
