K&B Aurora 8 lane championship lap counter

Postby mr_aurora » Sat Nov 07, 2015 7:36 pm

I attended the Allentown, PA slot car show today 11/7 and had a great time. Any of you old schoolers remember an 8 lane electric commercial lap counter manufactured by Aurora circa 1966 under the K&B name. One surfaced at the slot show and it is absolutely AWESOME. In 30 years of collecting Aurora memorabilia, I never heard of this. Any memories or thoughts? thanks, Bob Beers

That is definitely before my time - but how cool! :D
Any chance that you were able to get some photos of it?

(it is amazing the wide variety of products / manufacturers that were part of the hobby back then!)

Funny, halfway through your post I had decided to refer you to Bob Beers!

A kid I used to see at the hobby shop in the mid 60s had lots of K&B stuff, cars and Challenger & Super Challenger motor/drive units, etc. But I never heard of fancy track accessories, much less for an 8 laner!

I have an American Raceways 8 lane counter. The thing is huge, and a monument to electro-mechanical engineering... mostly pinball machine parts with contact breakers.

That's exactly what we used to call those old lap counters, the pinball machine! Does yours have the bells inside that countdown to the start of the race? Ding, ding, ding... Power On! As a kid I used to love that deal, it was one of the things that made racing at the commercial raceway special back then. I passed on a deal in the mid 1980's to buy an original American "Yellow" 80' track with power supply/time seller unit, "pinball machine" lap counter and stand for a lowly $500.00 - simply because I had no place to put it!
Man, there's one I wish I had back... Ernie :>)

I have two of those lap counters from American raceways, one with the original huge steel rollaround stand. There's a good chance they are going to get junked when I sell the property where they are stored. Nobody seems to be able to transport the 150 Imperial that comes with them, even for free.

That is a shame. These things are historical relics.

Ahh man... ran a lot of laps on an epoxy surfaced Imperial back in the middle/late 1980's, many with hard body cars, too.
Once again an American Raceway presents itself to me and I've NO place to put it!
Gotta look into this further... Ernie :>)
