Believe me, there's no such thing as a "permanent" solder joint. HRW has numerous topics and instructions about soldering. Easy to find. The better your equipment, the better you are at soldering, in the most practical terms, though years of experience will equal fine equipment eventually, so just seek the good stuff and save time. You can't use too much flux is another axiom to learn. Solder will flow uphill with enough flux on cleaned up material. Also, its better to be too hot than not hot enough.
