Mid 60's Modified

Postby btaylor » Sun Nov 25, 2018 7:05 am

Just finished up an early modified. based on the 1/25 scale AMT 32 ford coupe body, i opened up the windows, and cut her down a bit. Next came a late 50's 392 Hemi, supposedly bored and stroked to 426 CI. LOL. The whole mess is on a scratchbuilt brass chassis, with all the usual suspects for gears, wheels etc. The motor is Bin unit of unknown origin, but turns up to 19,965 respectfully. The rear tires are my own casting, as are the wheel inserts. The Driver figure is a 3d printed version, with the STL file coming from a friend. I printed him off this morning.
I moved the front axle forward on this for a better look, and without really thinking about it, i changed the pivot point on the guide. The car has a longer wheel base, but handles like a short car. It actually hauls the mail pretty well.

Nice! Those are the cars that used to run at the track near where I grew up - The Pines Speedway in Groveland, MA.

Would you consider doing a commission car - an old fav of mine?

Do you have pictures? It would be fun to build a replica car!

Yes, I think I can find some; I’ll check and see what I can come up with. Glad you’re interested in taking a look.

Bob, Here's the car.

It's "The Big O" (Ow, not zero), a Class A Modified banked oval short-track racer from the mid-60's. Raced by one of our local racing heros, Ollie Silver. When it was tuned right; which was most of the time, it was pretty much unbeatable and The Pines Speedway in Groveland, MA.

Ollie also raced at Star Speedway in Epping, NH, and he was a favorite of mine back in my younger days.

Allan, don't know if you know it or not, but there's an Ollie car sitting in the museum in Loudon, NH. Not the one in your pic, but a later one.

I remember him racing at Waterford, and lapping the field. I was racing there when he did that. I was racing in the late models back then. REL13
