Likely in the center. The chassis under it is an old "Tri 5" as they called them. The chassis from the 55-56-57 Chevrolet. They were used heavily in many cars back then.

Do you have info on that car? Asphalt Maverick Modifieds were a pretty rare deal, even back in the 70s when lots of unusual body styles could be seen on track.

I could be wrong - and just guesswork, but it looks like a NY Modified - Western NY really.

On Long Island we all went crazy for the #1 'Offset' coupe; where that driver, Charlie Jazombek, sat *on the right side* of the car, while the entire big block Chevy driveline sat all the way to the *left*. It was a totally unique deal at Islip Speedway, and for a while the fastest car at the track.

In Western NY, at tracks like Lancaster Speedway, there were quite a few Modifieds set up like this - I think they were inspired by the offset Super Modifieds that were run in the region.

I think that asphalt Maverick may be an Western NY style offset, maybe even a Lancaster Speedway car, with the driver on the right, and left side hood scoop for the set back motor on the left. The rear quarter looks like it may even say Sanborn, NY - a town which is a pretty short ride from Lancaster Speedway?

You could be right. It's a Bob Krull modified from Lancaster NY. Didn't mention any offset, but it sure could be.

Cool reference... These particular cars are from a brief but interesting period - a neat footnote to the NY Modifieds scene.

Lancaster Speedway imposed the 'Series 70' rule in 1973. This meant all the cars had to run a 1970 or newer body style and had to be complete with full sheet metal fenders and hoods; no chopped off noses, no open wheels. It was an attempt to remove some of the 'perceived stigma' that the Modifieds were 'jalopies', and not relevant, contemporary, or up to date.

Many simply converted their coupes and sedans, where ill-fitting roll cages and down tubes sometimes revealed the car's origin. A close look at the Maverick looks like it may have run an early Coupe or Sedan body in 1972 or before.

Mostly the full sheet metal noses didn't hold up, and the 'Pinto Revolution' had already started, and 30s Coupes were getting scarce at the yards - so the whole deal was changing anyhow. And frankly a lot of these 'Series 70' cars looked awkward depending on the wheelbase and builder...

The particular cars posted on this thread looked good and have good proportion, but overall the 'Series 70' cars were unpopular with drivers and even fans.

So after only one season, the 1973 season, 'Series 70' at Lancaster was done.
