Woody I did a black asphalt track surface with a flat black paint and tiny little shavings of steel, intended to give a magnetic advantage. I didn't like it, and I lightly sanded it down, leaving the scarified bits of metal showing through the black. It was a great surface, and looked exactly like scale asphalt. The trouble was, no matter how many miles of travel on it, it never rubbered in at all. Honestly, if you get grip and enjoy the run on it, leave it alone. You won't get better scale appearance without making a sacrifice.
You know what good looks like. Remember the woodworker's rule- the enemy of "good" is "perfect".
