I will start this by saying that I love oval slot car racing. In the past year I have raced on ovals at Outback Motor Speedway in Winchester, Portsmouth Motor Speedway in Hagerstown Md., Scale Speed Raceway in Denver, Pa. Sheaves Raceway in Virginia and Indoor Motor Sports in Richmond, Va. and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. Today I had the pleasure of racing at May Way Speedway in Powhatan, Va. and found yet another group with a slightly different slant on slot car racing. This group is a rather laid back group who are more interested in having fun while still wanting to win races. They have three basic classes with SCX NASCARS with stock motors, womps with H&W 26K motors and a 1/24 Hard Body street stock using H&K NASCAR chassis with the H&K 26K motor. The races are run on a fairly small six lane Ed Tunkel oval and here is where the real fun begins. Each lane has adjustable voltage and the outer lanes runs on higher voltage to keep lap times even from the inside to the outside lanes. The races are held in six segments with laps from 20 to 30 per heat making the race. Heats are determined more by feet than by laps and six segment races are decided by feet of a lap. I was not too sure about the racing when it was described to me, however, running for 30 laps door to door is a lot of fun and a change from the normal oval race where you race the track and lose laps on the outside and make them up on the inside. This type of racing might not be for everybody and if win at all cost rather than good hard and fair racing is your goal you most likely will not be very happy with this laid back group. Like I stated this racing was as much fun as I have had at a track in a long time.
