It's simple. It works. ?? Newcomers/first time builders can easily join in using the inexpensive brackets available.

Well, whatever is good for everybody, I guess. My first brass chassis was a sidewinder, using a homemade bracket. That was so long ago, I got the template from Car Model Magazine. I cut the holes with an egg beater style drill. I won't say how it ran... Yes I will. It was pathetic. Massive Classic motor, brass pinion, Cox spur gear, several other bits and pieces I could get as castoffs from other guys. Sure wish I still had it. Part of the chassis structure was wire from my paper route bundles.

Rob, if you wanted, you could build a reproduction of your early sidewinder. Since you probably don't still have your paper route, you could use coat hanger wire instead. I bet you could come up with any other needed pieces to construct it right here on HRW. I've got one of those old egg beater style drills. I don't know how old it is, but I've had it for 55+ years. I've got my dad's old "Push Drill" too. Do you recall what you used to solder your sidewinder? Was it an iron or a gun? I used a gun on my first brass chassis built in 1969 or 70.

To be clear, are you going to allow "Period" Fantasy liveries or will this have to be a replica of something that actually raced?

Period fantasy just fine. As long as it looks like it should/could have kicked up the sand. Common sense will prevail I am sure. Plenty of reference material to guide you.

Bill, I had an "electric solder pencil". They were a sort of cheap, small, low temp version of a soldering iron. I learned about soldering in Shop class in the 8th grade, and we used iron billets on handles, heated in a small gas furnace on the shop bench. After using that kind of heat, that little pencil was disappointing. The binding wire from the newspaper bundles was thinner than coathangers, and the rest of it was brass wire (which is why I had to twist it all the time to get all four wheels on the ground at the same time). Axles were bought as were wheels, guide, braids, and tires. The motor was given to me by a drag racer who wasn't happy with modifications he made to it, and the gears were from a junk Cox magnesium chassis and burned up motor I saw in a trash can. The body was a baby blue '41 Willys by AMT. I was overjoyed to see it go all the way around the track the first time. Everybody in the hobby shop wanted to run it, and I was on cloud 9 all day. Good memories.

Ok, I have been looking for an excuse to build out one of these late forties/early fifties bodies for some time. Not my usual era, but We're in for proxy #2.... the team has been really enjoyin' the 2016 Trans-Am, so I'm ordering some pieces today.

I have found a reasonable amount of information on what the beach racers looked like on the outside, but pretty much zip for interior configuration. I assume in this case "stock" means stock, but did they carry extra instrumentation like tachometers? Was it a practice to remove extra seats? How much of a Rollbar was used?
