The Showdown: stuff I learned

Well, after my first build and first mail-in race, here are a couple of things I came away with.

1. Confirmation that the fun hobbies aren't cheap. I didn't have a parts bin to draw from, but even though I didn't buy anything I didn't use, I have over $100 in this car. But worth every cent, because it's a one-of-one and no one else in the world has one like it.

2. The simple chassis ran right with the more complex designs. The top three qualifiers appeared to run some version of a rigid, symmetrical, "Stinker-style" chassis. But it was great fun watching the more innovative projects come together. Makes me want to try a little something different just to see what happens. This fun-run is a great race for that.

3. Y'all are a good bunch of guys. Very supportive of everyone's efforts. I hope I get the chance to race with some of you sometime.

I think anyone reading this who has not built a slot car should take something from this.

The feeling of accomplishment and creating something unique far exceeds the dollar amount invested.

For me it was about the building and the experience.
I bet it cost me a lot more than you BD, as I invested in a Hakko soldering station in addition to my parts hauls from SCC. :)
For me it was getting back into building (long time plastic model kit builder) and the challenge of working with brass and using all the techniques shown here on the site.

The time everyone takes to show how they do stuff and willingness to help a new guy have some fun makes this hobby so great!
I have been known to drop 50-70 bucks on a RTR slot car and they are fun. However the joy of hand building one and then to have so many complements on my work made it worth all the money spent. Plus now I have the tools to make more. :text-thankyouyellow: :text-bravo:
