39 Chevy - Big Bowtie

Postby HomeRacingWorld » Wed May 29, 2013 8:00 pm

This kit has been around for a while :) I have avoided building it because it was 1/24 and I like 1/25 better.

But I want a bowtie for our new series and this one will fit in regardless.

This project is more of a challenge as I am using old spare parts. I enjoy hammering things back into shape to make them work. Curly is not too happy of course. He does not like some of his favorite toys taken from his yard.

But it had to be done. :)

Now I know Rob is building one and DixonJohn just finished one. Maybe a couple more of you guys will join in too.

Beautiful pant on that car. Cant't wait to see it done. Again I like the color. Matches the box art

I think that's the color of the kit. Like Harry said, its been a while since I saw that one.

I have always like the '39 Chev. I have a panel truck '39 Chevy that swaps chassis with a '56 Chevy Coupe. They are the only two street cars I have, so I made them share a chassis. Works pretty good.

I know all of you have been waiting with anticipation on the progress...

Chassis finished and model painted. Went with classic black. It helps hide my imperfections :)

Image

The chassis was an old one that was cut for a modified so that is the reason for the small tabs.

Still works fine. Used basic rod for the nerf bars, they came out ok.

Image

Used styrene sheets to build up the body mount. Since I wanted to keep the running board and fenders for our series, this was a decent way to do it and it worked well.

Image

Took 3 layers. I used standard Testors glue and some mini-clamps.

Image

I used a small bead of hot glue on each side to hold the chassis steady. Then using a pin vise, I hand drilled the holes. Once completed, just use an Exacto knife to trim away the hot glue.

More recycling. Old Pro Track wheels with foam removed and sanded. Paul Gage Jalopy Series tires glued on. I coat the wheel with clear nail polish and then set the tire on and adjust it. Using the nail polish, it allows me time to work with the tire. You add a bead of super glue on the inside and outside edges if you want to once the tire is set.

Hope the mount system helps some of you thinking about building one.

No, but the tires he has already work pretty good. I'll PM you my tire list I use for mods and such.

Oh boy is this going to be a colorful field! We needed a shiny black in the group with lots of gold on it. Don't ya love that grill on the '39! I never did a '39 without those huge headlights, but this looks great without them. Some movie I saw had a '39 Chevy hearse in it during a chase scene and it was spectacular to see that monster making corners. I can't wait to see the lineup.

It made great progress today, Boss. Where did that old Plymouth come from? I don't remember that one.

Oh yeah, that is one Tom did a month ago. He did some final touches on it this past weekend.

And if course, it's the class of the field :)
