Another tire option for the Asphalt Modifieds

Postby turbokev » Sun Oct 19, 2014 7:48 pm

Right after I built up the #77 Modified car using CBD 15x11 wheels and Paul Gage 21147 tires,
Paul announced a new tire to fit the 14x12 wheel.. the 22166. Very close in height, but a thicker
sidewall to make up for the smaller wheels diameter, and (in theory) a wider tire..

I ordered a set of the F1 wheels from SCC.. 14 x 12, and a set of the new tires from Paul on ebay.
They arrived yesterday and here's what I found..

Overall height:
20.75 for the 21147 tires mounted to a 15x11 wheel
22.00 for the 22166 tires mounted on a 14x12 wheel

Total width:
14.00 for the 21147 tires mounted to a 15x11 wheel
15.95 for the 22166 tires mounted on a 14x12 wheel

The surprising find was in the actual contact patch..
While the new 22166 tires are nearly a full 2mm wider, the contact patch is 1mm smaller.
12.70 for the 21147 tires mounted to a 15x11 wheel
11.70 for the 22166 tires mounted on a 14x12 wheel

I’ve pictured them below and I show the new wheel and tires mocked up with
one of the new modifieds I got from Vintage1/24 (chassis by slotguy).

The new tires mounted on the CBD F1 14x12 wheels:

Here’s the visual difference in the 2 tires from above so you can see the contact patch:

..and here is how they look mocked up on the new Modified:

Here’s a couple pictures of an actual Modified I took Saturday at Thompson Speedway..
It was on display to promote a racing school.. you can see the sidewalls have that ‘meatier’ appearance.

Also notice the offset of the body.. see how the drivers side tire is tucked in under the fender,
yet entirely (pun intended) exposed on the passenger side.. The body / chassis that is available
from Vintage 1/24 nails this look..

Once I get the Bodine car built up I’ll be doing lap comparisons etc but my initial thoughts
are this.. I like the look of the 22166 and 14x12 wheel better, and even at the expense of
1mm less contact patch I think they will run just as well, if not better than the 21147 set
up I already have on the #77 car.. The slightly larger diameter on the 22166 should make
the car slightly faster in a straight line, making up for any loss of cornering speed the
1mm wider 21147 might have.. This is all just thinking out loud of course, the proof will
come when both cars hit the track and I get some testing laps in.

I’ve got a new way to mount the front axle to try as well.. so I’ll post the Bodine build
as I get that completed.. Gotta say “Thanks!” to Vintage1/24 and slotguy again for
making these available.. I absolutely love these Mods~!

I like the realistic sidewall profile and extra heft of the latest setup, but the larger rim of the first one maybe sits better.

How they run has to be part of the equation of course - so track testing will be interesting.

Are there any wide-5 style rims out there for tires like these?

I will be watching this space to see how these 1/32 scale asphalt modified wheel/tire setups work out. Thanks for the great posts and pics.

Here's another combination.. the new 22166 tires on the CBD 15x11 wheels.
They stretch right on and look good.. They increase the diameter to 22.90 though
So, a taller tire but perhaps more proportional to the 15x11 rim?

They do fit fine, but due to the inner rib difference, there is a very slight
concave to the contact patch.. Sanding the tires will get rid of that, no issue.

Unfortunately, the 'steel' wheels jump from 15x8 to 15x11 with no 15x10 inbetween..
A 15x10 with a 6mm rib to fit the 22166 tire would be ideal, but I can make this
most recent combination work as well..

Vintage1/24.. I think there are wheel inserts in the wide 5 style that could be used
with the CBD insert wheels.. and those wheels are available in 15x10, 15x11 and 15x12

Here's some more pictures~

Couple more for comparison:

Steelies are my favorites, but they look pretty good on the 15x10's insert/stocker too.

The fit is very good as you mentioned.
