I like it - this kind of thing has been tried before - but this module has a great sound.

There are definitely different ways to hack this, but it seems like the main limitation will be the quality and size of the physical speaker that has to travel around with the car?

I guess if it were keyed off of tire rpm (and not throttle position) you could introduce shift point effects as the car accelerates, or I suppose it could shift after a certain duration of time at wide open throttle?

But yeah I think the trick is for the speaker to have the right 'roar' going around the track?

Why not copy the HO train sound systems that have been around for many years?

That's a really interesting idea, Scalextric did a "SoundTrack" box in the 1980s which produced engine sounds and even skid and crash sounds, although it was fixed to the side of the track and didn't go in each car. That might be worth considering to get a more realistic sound from a larger speaker?

I think the main problem is you'd need a chip inside to handle all the realistic sounds you need. The trains seem to just play 3 sounds:
1. It senses a little movement then nothing - it plays the sound file of a stationary engine.
2. It senses movement that's continuous - it plays the sound file of an accelerating engine.
3. Once (2) has happened for a bit and the motion sensor decreases it plays the sound file of a slowing engine.

For a car you need more variation, although it is possible because that's what video games do. You might want:
1. Current through the track increases - accelerating noise, but with it changing up a gear or two if held (don't let it sound like the Fast & Furious with that well known 15 speed gearbox)
2. Sudden drop in track current - blip the throttle and change down, if still no current drop another gear

But you'd need a tame software engineer to make that work I think. Stick at it!

With a little acoustic experimentation, the car body could be a major part of the speaker system.

I think you pretty much have it in hand with the sound racer module and the cheap fm radio - a very workable approach. The little earbud speakers probably won't do it when the car is 12-16 feet away on a larger road course or oval track.

If you can fit something with enough volume/pressure/output and bass - the biggest speaker you can make work - I think it would be a lot of fun. Getting a whole field running realistic sound would be great.

I will be watching this space.

Neat idea but with such s small amount of space to work with I think it will be difficult to get decent sound.

Do s Google search for the Traxxas 1/10th scale stadium truck with sound. It's pretty cool, but there's more room to work with.
