What airbrush do you use?

Any strong feelings about airbrushes? Can you get away with cheap or does it just HAVE to be top-of-the-line?
Thanks,
Paul

I've a dual action Paasche, but got miffed with cleaning it all the time. Currently using an mega-cheap external mix for painting cars. I'll still use the Paasche if I have fine work on the go or want to tackle a graduated paint job. But the single is quick and dirty and cleans in a dream. Cost me about $25 to the door. I'm sure you'd get even cheaper deals Stateside.

I have an ancient (1974 or so), Badger, but you can get a lot of very good info on an old topic in the Painter's Corner that has almost the same title as this one. You should be able to get it on a search in one try.

I use a Badger Crescendo 175. I like it a lot. Its super easy to clean, dual action, suction feed, and it's not to skinny. I also have an old single action Badger that I don't use much anymore.

Only one problem there. Anyone who has joined since the move from Yuku (shouldn't that be Yokel?) can't read it.

I did go back through several pages of posts with no luck so I decided to ask. What is yuku? I was asked to join, but wanted to make sure if I needed to do so.

What is dual action and single action?
Thanks,
Paul

Yuku was the old host for HRW. Harry worked forever to get this new site going, and its 1000% better.

Dual action means that the amount of air passing through the gun and the amount of paint are controlled by the same button or lever by moving it up and down or front to back and all positions in between. Single controls the air only- I think. I never had a single action.

In a really simplified answer: Single action you push the trigger and paint comes out. You control the paint flow with a knob you twist.Dual you can control the air flow out of the brush independently of the paint coming out. Push down to get air flow, pull the trigger back to control paint flow.

If I were starting out I would just get the cheapest gravity feed dual stage no name brand. I think amazon has them starting at 17 bucks. Then decide if you want to spend more money.

I got this one at Harbor Freight for less than $20. It is a dual action with an adjustable stop on the trigger. I only need to paint bodies, so a single action woud do me just as well. I was looking for something so I could do colors that don't come in rattle cans or to use water based paints. Since I mostly paint HO bodies the amount of paint needed is small, you use up more of it mixing and cleaning up than you actually put on the car. In the future I will try to do several cars in the same color in one day. Since the paint has to be diluted you get a lot of fumes when you use solvent based paints. That was one reason that I built a spray booth.
Someone said that they had problems with a Harbor freight brush, but mine works fine. I added the trap and regulator, the air hose was also extra.

I have an ATD-6849 air brush kit that I've never gotten around to setting up and using, mainly because I don't have a place to set up a compressor to run it. So I still use a Testors "airbrush" that has the replacable propellant can. May be low teck, but it works.

This is what I have,

My former brother-in-law used to work at Snap On Tools. He knew I liked models, so he gave this to me. I have not used it, but now I need to start painting soon, so I am going to use this one as soon as the body is ready. This might suffice, but I know that airbrushes have become quite good compared to this old one.

I really like how supportive everyone has been. This is a great community.
