Spent the better part of yesterday at what is Long Island's largest annual Model Railroading show, which draws well over 1,000 attendees each January. It's held at the Freeport Recreation Center, the same large venue where the Long Island Auto Replica Society (LIARS), the model car club of which I'm a member, holds our annual "Model Car Challenge" show and swap meet in November. The RR show chairmen assigns me a single vendor table right near the customer entrance, where I set up signs calling for "car guys" to come on over and talk. I have a few dozen assorted car model kits, slot cars and die cast out for easy sale, and all that automotive color really pops out from the set ups of the train vendors. I talked up the three major model/slot car shows for 2016 on Long Island: The Super Bowl Slot Car Show, Long Island Toy Car TRIFECTA (April 3rd), and the LIARS event (November 12th). This year will be the LIARS special 25th Silver Anniversary show, so please attend if you can. Also, after a few years of my lobbying, I'm proud to announce the addition of two new judged trophy classes - HO scale and 1/32-24 scale customized/scratchbuilt slot cars!
By the end of yesterday's Model Railroading show, I had handed out hundreds of fliers, and fielded dozens of questions. As a personal bonus, I handed my card to many who may still have old model/slot car stuff they are ready to sell off. Many wanted to re-enter the hobbies, too, which is always welcomed. Even manged to sell some stuff to a few wide eyed kids - aged 8 to 80!
A fun day with a good result for all involved. -- Ernie :>)
