I have been stewing about this for years, ever since I replaced the second $150 ballast. The second electrician (the one who actually had some idea of what he was talking about), told me that these lights need a line regulator to keep the electrical feed clean (think about the old days of using car batteries for slot cars and how often we had to clean the braids), or I would keep melting ballasts or whatever was happening to them (god they stink- has to be poisonous, it just has to be). So, I have been in the dim light of four tubes in two fixtures all this time, anytime the weather didn't allow opening all the doors for daylight. And I have been wishing I didn't have to dump all my 1/24-25th cars because the track won't accommodate them. This arrangement will give me a 1/24-25th oval for the big cars and I get to keep the track I have now for the 1/32nds. I can't wait.

If you already have fixtures with regular 4 foot flourescent tubes you can replace those with LED tubes as long as the fixtures have modern electronic ballasts. Different color temperature tubes are available and they even make some that work straight from 117VAC. In that case if you had a fixture with an old fashioned PCB (toxic!) filled ballast you could remove that and run AC straight to the tubes. I paid $13 each for new LED tubes. Another bonus is that if the fixture is in a cold area the LED tubes come to full brightness right away.
