The Sunoco Camaro crash at the Glen (somewhat graphic)

Postby turbokev » Fri Sep 27, 2013 7:39 pm

I've been trying to find updates on the owner / driver Bill, his Camaro and the photographer that was hit..

Bill is doing OK with just bumps and bruises.. The photographer is also recovering after surgery to repair his left shoulder and arm.

Don't know where the Camaro is or what the restoration plans are yet..

But I did find this amazing snapshot of the moment of impact.. I had read that he was traveling at 100+ when he hit..
I fully believe that estimate having seen this image.. That car was hauling when it hit the guard rail..

I'm so glad nobody was killed.. this was a scary crash, especially for a vintage race.

Dave, didn't we just have that conversation over the phone about that pileup?

I'm a big fan of Historic racing wether it be tin tops or open wheelers.
It's great to see the old warhorses out doing what they were meant to do.

It's sad to see them when they get bent up, but not as sad as seeing them gathering dust in a shed or museum and never actually getting to a track.

As for leaving a mark, well I reckon the biggest mark would have been in that photographers underwear!!!

Great Pics.

I was working tech at the crash a RA. They initially blamed the starter for it and was part of the reason
the VSCDA lost control of that event. But later several video experts analized all the footage that was turned
in, and found that the racers were already full on as soon as they left turn 14. Since you can't see the starters
bridge from there, only the cars topping the hill could see that there was a wave-off. They slowed to pace lap
speed, but the cars coming up the hill did not and ran into the backs of the lead cars. The rules dictate that
you are not racing until you see the green flag. So the cars behind the hill were actually at fault. The soundtracks
were also checked by an audio expert, and according to his report several of the engines were turning close to if
not over 10,000 rpm, something that they could not do with late '60s stock block engine technology. So for several
years after that we started scrutinizing the engines more closely.
