Glue question

Postby hoganracing » Wed Jan 15, 2014 9:30 pm

I have a model that a previous owner partially assembled. I do not know what type glue they used to glue the windshield to the body, but they used plenty of it. I am trying to remove the glass from the body without damaging either one too severely.

Any suggestions on softening the glue so the glass can be removed?

Thanks.

Awfully difficult without knowing what type of glue was used.

Without knowing it is difficult. Likely not Superglue if there is not much there as it usually "smokes" or stains the glass.

Acetone softens Testors glue, but may harm glass.

Most other glues soften with simple moisture. Try soaking it overnight in some mild dishwashing liquid/water.

Moisture can soften it and allow you to try and prey it away.

I got a few old models and put them in a tub of blue degreasers they fell apart after a week, no harm done to glass or model

The kit and glue are old enough that it is not superglue. It is a brownish-yellow. I tried the freezer trick and that didn't work. I was able to carefully (though not carefully enough) slide a knife blade between the glass and the roof and was able to at least work the front edge loose. You probably can tell where this is headed! I knew, but didn't stop soon enough. At least the plastic didn't break and the cut will heal after a bit. :)

I'll give the overnight soak a try.

What I have done with the freezer trick is put the car in water first to get some water up in the pockets between the glass and the roof. Then the freezing expands the water and it pops off. The yellow/brown sounds like wood glue, especially the water proof variety. Look out for that stuff. The hold is phenomenal. If you can pry the glass away just a bit, try slipping the edge of some paper or masking tape in the gap. Then you can mask the rest the usual way and leave the glass alone while you paint.

Thanks for the input. I'll retry the freezer trick with dampness added.

I'm trying to remove the glass so that one of the SEMO gang who casts bodies can make a mold of the glass and then repop some for some project he has in mind, so it is not a question of protecting the glass from paint (though that information will be filed away for future reference).

For years to come I should have a nice scar to remind me of this project! :) Did you catch that, Mr. Agee?
