The Lime Rock Park display~

Postby turbokev » Mon Sep 01, 2014 6:02 pm

When my Dad and I found out that LRP wanted to display the match stick building he made, I couldn't just let it sit on a green tablecloth..
I asked my Dad to make the correct starters stand and I went to work on the base, guardrails and signage..

Here it is sitting in the drivers lounge at LRP..
Both Sam Posey and Sir Stirling Moss got to see it in person and commented that it was "Brilliant" work..

Sam had taken a fall earlier in the week and his appearance at the track was too short for me to have him sign anything,
but I did have Sir Stirling sign the #722 SLR from the display for me~

The Posey cars represented are the familiar 1970 Trans Am Challenger, the BMW that Sam co-drove to a 4th in class at the 1976 24 hours of LeMans
and the #1 Peter Revson Mustang. Why Revson’s car? Because the Trans Am race at Lime Rock fell on the same weekend as the Indy 500 in 1969.
Peter was in Indy, and Sam Posey, as a substitute driver, took the Revson boss Mustang to victory lane that day.

The Stirling Moss cars include the #19 1955 Mercedes SLR that was leading the 24 hours of LeMans when Mercedes pulled out mid race due to the earlier
tragic accident that resulted in spectator fatalities. Also from 1955, the #722 SLR that Stirling drove to victory at the famous Mille Miglia race in Italy..
Why #722? His start time was 7:22am in that race. The final Moss car is the 1957 Vanwall F1 machine that he drove to 3 victories in 5 Grand Prix starts that year.

The building is now safely home and back on my slot track, awaiting the running of the Porsche RSR IROC proxy race :D

ps. The folks at LRP were great to us and gave us all access passes.. we stayed there in our RV for 6 days prior to and during the vintage race festival.
Here's the real building and my kids enjoying the starters stand~

Superb display. I don't imagine we'll be seeing that Merc on Ebay any time soon.

Thanks all.. we had a great time.. It was great to spend time with my Dad and see
him enjoying the vintage racing as well.

My wife and I tried our best to complicate things by going to 'just look' at replacing our
RV 6 days prior to leaving for Lime Rock.. 'Just looking' turned in to buying a 35 foot
5th wheel.. ps. I had no pick up truck to tow it with. But thankfully, everything fell
in to place and I was able to come up with a V10 F350, and have the 5th wheel hitch
installed 48 hours before we departed.. Left us Tuesday to pack the RV and we left
Wednesday morning at 9:30am. Our stay was much more comfortable this year

Of course the stars of the weekend are the vintage race cars and there was no shortage
of classic vehicles to enjoy.. Spent some time talking to Frank Grimaldi, the owner of this
vintage TA car. It was originally run by Skip Barber in 1968 at Briar in NH, then Frank bought
it in 1970, ran it 'till and sold it in 1975 and got it back 15 years later. He's been running vintage
events ever since. He was fantastic and let my kids crawl all over the car and answered all the
questions Cooper could throw at him.. I took a bunch of reference pictures so I can build a slot version.

While we were there, my Dad and I took a bunch of pictures of the actual Michelin Tower..
My Dad plans to build a more accurate version and then maybe we can donate the current
building to Lime Rock to display there permanently..
