I can see a lot of similarities to my '66 Cub Cadet, including that 11hp Kohler (its a beast, and it is an engine design that just WANTS to run, very satisfying). The wheels and tires are identical, locations of controls, seat position, lift lever, and I suspect battery location all look the same.

If our resident dirt burners can't find parts for you, I'll be glad to go through my old links from when I did the restoration. .

Harry,
If I were closer to you I'd send my Grandfather's old Wheel Horse your way. It's a 62 502(?) but it's got a blown motor (my Dad) and has been setting for about 15 years.
The one the General got for you is cool, though for mowing duties I'll stick to my Kubota diesel G1800.

So are you going custom (candy apple metalflake) or straight restoration?

Sarge has reminded me of a couple of things. First, Krylon has a division that makes perfect replica spray paints for all tractors and industrial equipment. I have it for my Cub Cadet, Farmall Super A, and the John Deere. Doesn't cost much and is great paint. Also, don't get a mowing deck for it. The old decks were high maintenance and dangerous as hell. Stick with that John Deere that floats around the yard like a flying saucer. Its the best there is until you get above 4 acres, but watch out for that idler pulley in the middle of the tractor drive. It fits perfectly upside down, and it won't last two months if you mess up.

My Kubota is a small tractor, way too big to maneuver around the house, but invaluable for the rest of the place. Of course, with the world full of idiots who will believe anything, I pay more for diesel than for the gas in the John Deere. Can you tell I'm ticked off about it? You should see the fuel oil bill for the house in winter!

I am planning a straight resto. Or at least the best I can.

Now be careful Sarge...I DO have a pick up and you are not that far :)

I already found a few parts too. I want a snow blade for it. :)

Woods made a great one that was universal for the little tractors, but the weight of it on the lifting lever is a lot for your arm to bear repeatedly. Also, those turf tires are fine for almost everything, but not snow removal. You need some serious cleats for that, and wheel weights. You should be able to find them for around $100, at 120 pounds, 60 each. Check with the place you have install the new tires, they should be able to fill the tires with water and nitrogen.

Nice one Harry. I like the older lawn tractors because they look like tractors instead of the plastic fantastics they sell now. Don't get me wrong you guys with the newer ones which probably work much better than the old ones. It just a personal preference. My favorites are the Cub Cadets, Wheelhorses, ect. They are just cool. 8-)

I know what you mean, Ken. My Cub Cadet (1966), has an amazing number of parts in common with my Farmall Super A (1951). The old Cub Cadets were truly little tractors.

We (my family) had a Cub Cadet that we purchased new in '69 for use on our new farm in Arkansas. I recall it had a twin channel beam frame, cast iron front axle, all-steel construction, and huge (and heavy) mower deck. We also had a blade, plow, disk, and ?? for it. I used it to keep the lawn, did light brushhogging (the mower would eat up whatever I could run over), do the garden, even used the blade to spred wood shavings in our broiler (chicken) houses. (It was used between every broiler batch in the chicken houses.) There were a few times I used the blade to level our driveway and other things. Amazing construction in that tractor and amazing durability. You're right, they really were "small tractors". Ours definitely worked for its keep!

Cool thread.

You remember exactly correct LAM. It was common for the Cub Cadet and a few others to have a factory equipped hydraulic lift- invaluable when using a 90 pound grading blade or a loader bucket. I wish mine had it.

That's something for you to know, Harry- A snow blade is much lighter weight than a grading blade. Don't get a bargain on something that will hurt your back after one run down the driveway! When shopping, the snow blades were very popular in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. You'll get a better price there, and they might well be in better shape than a blade that doesn't get as much use. We have a couple of long-time members from both those states, at least one of whom is a direct hit in western PA. Do we still have that map somewhere with all the hometowns pinned?
