Jaguar in the Driveway...

Postby SlotCarCorner » Sun Sep 15, 2013 9:21 pm

My sister and brother-in-law stopped by this afternoon in a vintage Jaguar - what a great looking car! You may recall they showed up in a Ferrari 599 a while back. It's like reliving the Goodwood FOS...

Oh my word. Yes please!! Beautiful black cat. Better than the Ferrari any day.

Seems I'm going to have to do one of the ones in my pile in black. And the white walls set it off beautifully. But I really need someone to do some appropriate inserts.

Not much better than a classic British sports car, and that one is beautiful. Made back in the days when there was style. :)

Just one ride, that would be it. Then the quest to afford one would begin.

Very nice.

My mechanic is a recognised Jag man and had an XK120 in for some work after recently being imported.
He said it drove very well but he was made to feel slightly uneasy by the steering column, one long rod of steel, pointing directly at his chest.

I guess modern times have made us aware of such things.

Right. Before it became so congested around here, it was common for me to come home from a
bad day at work and just go for a drive in the E-type. Now there is just too much traffic. A tour
along the Fox river in the fall was one of my favorite activities. The Jaguar, Austin-Healey or
Triumph served that purpose well. Now they just go to car shows.

It was the fastest production car of its time. And remember that with only some fairly minor changes it raced as the C Type.

As much and all as I love the E Type. Given the choice I'd have a 120.

I try to consider this design in context with what else was on the road back in the early 1950s. Lots of pre-war Fords for sure. I can hardly imagine the contrast.

My Dad was granted a trip from rural NC to New York City for a job interview and attended the NY Auto Show the year these came out. Said it was spectacular to see one of the first imported but didn't see another back home until many years afterward.

So this wasin your driveway, and you don't post a picture of your son Tom sitting in it? What kind of a dad are you? :D

Or let me guess.... Tom's tongue was stuck on the driveway after seeing this in person...

As a kid, supercars were the be-all end-all. I'm realizing, though, that the Mini is the perfect car for me. I can throw it around and enjoy its potential WAY more than I could with any supercar. The supercar would just get me dead faster. That Jag is all about the joy of driving -- no supercar can touch it. :)

My uncle was Jaguar guy. He had a red XK-140 roadster and a series 1 1/2 E Type coupe. My Dad had to settle for a 3.4 Mk 1 Sedan......

You can get dead just as quickly in a Mini. It all goes to your driving habits. My first sports car was a
Triumph Spitfire. I had a lot of fun with that car. Especially when I started doing gymkhanas and track
days in it. And I was thumbing my nose at the Ferrari and Porsche guys, saying I was having as much
fun as they were at a fraction of the price. Then I started getting a much fatter paycheck, and I began
to look at those more expensive cars. Once I acquired a few of those more expensive cars, I began to
realize there is a reason they command a higher price. Did I have twice as much fun in a car that was
twice the price? No, but then fun does not increase exponentially with cost. Funny how having a few
extra coins jingling in your pocket can raise your expectations of fun.
