Well I love my new ASUS computer....I don't love Win 8.1 and I believe that Bill Gates and Microsoft are agents of the Dark Forces :text-protest: .
In the process of lightening our household ship, I have disposed of 5 old PCs but salvaged the hard drives out of them (and no, none of the CD drives out of them had the slim can motor in them, darn it :angry-tappingfoot: ). I got an IDE to USB cable so we could utilize the old hard drives and salvage photos and documents off of them. This plan worked out great....on the Desktop Windows 7 machine and my old XP laptop; not so much on the new one. It would recognize then not recognize... then it would say there was a problem and did I want it fixed.....when I said yes IT said it couldn't find the drive. SO I do a little online research and find Windows 8.1 not recognizing USB hard drives is a common problem. I tried several of the solutions that others had used but to no avail. Finally I called Microsoft  .....bottom line: A) There is no such problem B) If there is such a problem it must be hardware related, and C) My Windows 8.1 is not under warranty because I didn't buy it from Microsoft (but I can purchase a lifetime one for $149! :scared-eek: ) and I have to go to ASUS because they bought it from Microsoft. I finally solved my problem by doing some old school, block diagram/tech specs, troubleshooting. If I plug the drive into a Targus USB junction/splitter it attenuates the signal just enough that they link up fine. To heck with "new", me and my analog multi-meter will continue to troubleshoot the way we did back in the days of "steam powered" electronics! :character-oldtimer:
