One sadistic school I went to made the boys make new paddles for all the teachers when we started shop class. I always loved shop and completely lost myself in making the best paddles anyone ever saw. I got and A, lapped up all the praise they gave and was very pleased, while my friends looked at me and shook their heads in disgust. There were so many paddles from our class, they were distributed at other schools. During that year at school, I managed to get in trouble (I think I lived there), and one of MY paddles was used to spatter my butt to smithereens by a male principal (the women teachers were not much of a threat except for the humiliation), a sadistic monster who laughed while he tore people's butts up. Decades later, when I was loading my own match ammunition, the thought crossed my mind that I might be doing it again. How would that be for irony?

For you dragster fans I just donated mine to Raytown International Raceway...the original Piranha from 1966..

When the AMT Corp. purchased the rights to produce the real Piranha automobile, they also acquired the rights to produce plastic model kits of the car. Shortly after the real car hit the drag strips, AMT released a 1/25th scale version of the PIRANHA Rear Engine "Funny Car" Dragster, kit #910.

The Piranha was constructed at AMT's "Speed & Custom Division" shop at 1401 East Washington St., Phoenix, Arizona. Company promotional information stated it had 40,000 sq. ft. and a staff of 28 craftsman.

The L'il Coffin was a model I always wanted to make but never had the cash when I saw them in the store (remember buying models in a store? I loved it).

I have been looking for a 450 OHV "trail" bike to ride on the property here for years and years. I want one between 1968 and 1972, just before the tank design that you had, but they are so hard to find, I'd take what I find, ya know? When people get their hands on one, they tend to keep them. I have two antique BMW aircooled bikes, but I'm too old to ride on the street with the crazies, and they are too powerful and too street-oriented to be safe in the woods. I'm selling both of them as soon as someone gives me the right price.

The Icon ......

"Big Daddy" Ed Roth (1932 - 2001) was an artist and cartoonist who created the hot-rod icon Rat Fink and other extreme characters. As a custom car builder, Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot-rod movement of the 1960s. He grew up in Bell, California, attending Bell High School, where his classes included auto shop and art. The 1961 Beatnik Bandit hot rod at the National Automobile Museum, Reno, NevadaRoth is best known for his grotesque caricatures typified by Rat Fink depicting imaginative, out-sized monstrosities driving representations of the hot rods that he and his contemporaries built. Roth began airbrushing Weirdo t-shirts in the late 1950's along with fellow Kustom Kulture pioneers Dean Jeffries and Pete Millar at Car Shows and quickly became the forerunner of the movement. By the August 1959 issue of Car Craft Weirdo shirts had become a full blown craze. Detroit native Stanley Miller, a.k.a. "Stanley Mouse", and the lesser known Redina Studios soon followed, but Roth is certainly the individual who popularized the "Monsters in Hot Rods" art form. Roth is also known for his innovative work in turning hot rodding from crude backyard engineering, where performance was the bottom line, into a refined art form where aesthetics were equally important, breaking new ground with fiberglass bodywork. His creations include The Outlaw, The Beatnik Bandit, The Mysterion, The Orbitron, and The Road Agent among others. Numerous artists were associated with Roth, including painter Robert Williams, Rat Fink Comix artist R.K. Sloane, Steve Fiorilla (who illustrated some of Roth's catalogs), and Ed Newton who designed several of Roth's cars and many of the t-shirt designs. Roth was active in the field of counterculture art and hot-rodding his entire adult life. At the time of his death in 2001, he was working on an innovative hot-rod project involving a compact car planned as a radical departure from the dominant "tuner" performance modification style.

CARtoons was full of Ed Roth's stuff. I was gratified in 1999, when the town I lived in had a contest wherein teams of people decorated life sized statues of longhorn bulls in competition. The winner was a bold-as-brass pure Ed Roth Big Daddy design, covered in all kinds of Ed Roth stuff, including, right on the haunch where a branding iron would go, a huge Rat Fink. It was glorious.

My favorite thing to do with Ed Roth's cars when I was in my teens was to figure out where the parts came from, as he used stock parts from all kinds of cars. Beatnick Bandit had 1958 Chevy taillights, Mysterion had 1957 Ford taillights, etc.

These were where we used to use a thing called the telephone.

Don't laugh...every pay phone around here is long gone. Not even our small town Wal-Mart has them anymore.

A great site: The history of the slot car....Model Electric Racing Cars ....
Quote: Gigantic tracks of 200 to 300 feet in length were built including one 408 foot behemoth at Motorama Raceways in Van Nuys, California and an even larger track in East Meadow, New York that was said to have measured in at 475 feet. Raceways with five tracks and a drag strip were not uncommon.
Image

In late 1962 or early 1963 American Model Car Raceways out of Burbank, California was formed and soon business was booming designing and manufacturing 8-lane commercial tracks that were sold to too eager raceways all over the globe.

http://www.ddavid.com/slot-car-gallery/ ... istory.htm

I remember way back when 1963-4? I had a magazine that had a slot car drag racing segment and you could mail in your car to compete..And I remember some had these kind of motors...Man was that long ago I was 10 or 11
