Just watched a terrible/good movie

We get Netflix and I stumbled across a movie I saw when I was about 11. It's called Redline 7000 and it is terrible! The saving grace is the old NASCAR (64-65) footage (mostly spectacular wrecks) and the neat cars. It stars a very young James Caan and George Takei (Sulu) who, apparently, worked as a NASCAR crew chief before he got assigned to the Enterprise. Caan drives a GT350 and one of the other leads drives a Cobra Daytona coupe for his personal car. One of the female leads drives an MG 1100 sedan (how many remember those?).
And there are even cameos of drivers like Petty (in a studio mockup of a stock car). Take a look....if MST 3000 was still around it would be perfect for them!

What? That movie is fantastic!
You are forgetting the infamous slot car scene when they walked into the "new" club. :)

Harry beat me to it. I love the cheesy car movies from the 60s. The ones from the 50s are trying too hard to make gearheads into Mexican bandits, Hell's Angels or something, and the ones from the 70s are fine if you turn the sound off during the dialogue.

Wow... and nobody mentioned the footage of Cale Yarborough going over the wall in the Galaxie! That was real stuff, and he's told the story on national TV more than once. Many of the people in the film where big character actors of that time. Yeah, the sound effects where a little weird in some scenes, and they would show wrecks from older races, but Howard Hawks definitely made something that all motorheads of the era will remember. Plus, it's good reference material for us model car builder/racers. There is a brief scene of a slot car track in the night club, as Harry had said earlier. For that moment alone we should put this one on the "cool" list.
My brother and I always have a good time watching "R7000" when we catch it on late night TV. We'll tear into it technically as it's running, but still enjoy it just the same.
Happy Holidays... Ernie
