I'm leaving hobby due to financial difficulties. I lost a bunch of money every month when I became 65. It's no fun getting old. I will be selling off all my cars in the near future. There are literally hundreds of them, even I'm not sure how many. Keep a look out on the "For Sale" section.
I have met some of the finest people I know right here and I'm a better person because of that. I know I will miss you tremendously. :cry:

Ken,

First - it has been an honor getting to know you and our hobby will be certainly lessened if you leave it.
Second - I recommend keeping 10 of your absolute favorites and a small track you can setup whenever possible. That way you're never completely out and can still run some laps for a mental break now and again. Quitting cold-turkey would be hard in my opinion.
Third - I know that you've got some incredible builds so I will be watching for any sports car and T/A stuff you have and would be honored to run them.

Please don't be a stranger here - you're still family.

I'm very sorry to hear of your financial difficulties and you leaving the hobby. I am honored to have had a small amount of dialogue with you and equally honored to have the white Porsche 356 coupe from you, I will be running it in my clubs vintage series. I wish you luck and I would echo the suggestion to keep a small track and a few favorite cars.

I'm new to the forum and an unknown from the Southeast but I would concur with keeping a couple of cars. Sometimes a track owner is understanding of constrained budgets and a man needs something like our hobby to keep sane. I also know that sometimes an immediate crisis makes us feel compelled to sell everything to find some money and those around us think our hobby is expendable. Mention to those family members that you want to have their blessing to keep a couple for the memories and for posterity and then perhaps in a year or two things will loosen up a little.

Well you might want to keep a couple. I know a track in Missouri that is always FREE to use, in fact you get a free meal for every race you win.

In your case that's a lot because your models are simply some of the nicest, fastest cars, I have ever raced.

I understand your situation and hope for better things for you. Having you visit HRW and getting to know you on the forum is an honor. I do wish you stop in from time to time and hang around. You know us old farts, we won't leave you alone anyway :)

You and I have spoke and had swaps in the past and I too am sad to hear of your financial situation and having to leave the hobby. Like others have said at least keep a few cars and an oval of track to at least have something to enjoy during these tough times.

I know what you are going through with having financial issues of my own recently with having to go through a cervical spinal surgery and being on disability for 6 months. Half way through my disability was reduced to 60% and I had a family to still support and a mortgage to pay. Needless to say I liquidated my 150 car collection and 4 lane track also to help us get by through the tough times. I didn't save any of my cars and it upsets me that I didn't. But you have to do what you have to do to get by and this shall to pass for you like it did for me and things will get better. Just stay positive.

Fortunately I am back to work now and on the road to recovery each day. I just purchased my first 1/32 car again since leaving the hobby last year from a wonderful board member here Dave(TsgtRet). I look forward to slowly getting back into the hobby again and enjoying everything the hobby and this slot board has to offer.

As they say the sun will come out tomorrow, things will improve and just stay positive.

Being in the same "age boat" as you I understand. The need to generate cash from a "frivolous hobby" is sad but sometimes the situation demands it. What we do (particularly at our age) is therapeutic as much as it is fun. Running and building the cars/tracks is great but I would say that pales in comparison to the joy I derive from the interaction with the others in the hobby, particularly on this site; it isn't all "toy cars", that's why we have the "bench racers lounge". I encourage you, as others have done, to "keep your foot in the door". Further if there is a non-slot quandary involved in this we probably have someone on this site that can help. Stay with us, buddy, you would be missed.

My friend . . . . . . I just started having the same sadness over me that I felt when I buried my younger brother years ago. There is just nothing good to say about it - other than you will be missed by myself, and quite frankly lots of other good folk here on HRW.

Hopefully your financial status will change - I mean someone always wins the Lotto, so why not you?

Hopefully you'll be able to visit with us from time to time as I know personally, I consider you as a good friend.

Ken, being a relative newbie on this forum, I have not had the chance to make friends with everyone yet, but i have read many of your posts.
I too, am sorry to see anyone have to leave the Hobby for any reason, as it is a great escape from the day to day stuff we all have to deal with. If i may be so bold as to offer a suggestion, From what i have read, your slot car building skills are quite good, and maybe with some seed money from the sale of a few of them, you could Keep building cars, and offer them up for sale to subsidize your income. There is always someone who wants a custom built quality car, and the FOR SALE section of this forum would reach a lot of people wanting such cars.
Just a thought, and im sure one you may have considered, But it would keep you involved,and possibly help your financial situation.

Ken, it saddens me to think that there is yet another in the same shape I am in. There are far too many of us forced into this situation. After many months, I am beginning to see daylight. Retirement was a financial shock, then other happenings made it much worse. Scale back. Believe me, it is the wisest choice. The feeling you get from quitting does you harm, but scaling back is just an adjustment- hardly a bump in the road. C'mon, Ken, you know you'll miss us!
