Good bye my friend

Postby chappy » Tue Apr 05, 2016 8:44 pm

On the Sunday when the Pan Am race was going on, we were one man short of our normal crew.
My friend and neighbor Jack Strachan who always raced with us was in a care home.
We had visited him on Friday, and he was struggling but still had a sense of humor. He couldnt speak, but when I asked him if his controller hand still worked , he raised his hand and pulled the trigger as if he had it in his hand.
We called him Stirling Strachan, a gentleman racer and some slight resemblance .
We talked about him on Sunday during the races all feeling a bit of us was missing.
Jacks wife called me early Monday to let me know my dear friend had left us late Sunday.
Jack was always willing to help out, his wife always making desserts for our meets, an integral part of our lives.
I just wanted everyone to know that life sometimes really sucks and we lose some great people.
To my friend Jack , I will miss you, and our tuning time and gentleman races.
Heres to you Stirling and I hope you find a big slot track where you are. Start rubbering it in .

RIP my friend

Sorry to read about your friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your Buddy. It seems like we are losing more friends everyday any more. Hang in there and run a few laps on the slot track, it always helps.

My friend Sarge has it right- Those who go before us are reconnaissance waiting for us. With Marty, Pete, Jack, and a few more, there is a great race waiting. RIP.

Always difficult to see someone go. At least, he shared some good times with friends around a wonderful hobby before he left. That's a good enough reason to keep smiling.

Saying goodbye and letting go of fellow racers has been one of the hardest aspects in this hobby in the last ten years or so. Having started in the mid 60s and being active for the better part of 50 years both in commercial and more recently in 1/32 club racing, I have lost many friends. I always laugh and feel sad at the same time about me being 68 and still playing this child's game. I remember that for years every commercial track had THAT OLDER man who raced at times but also just hung out and was part of the atmosphere and as younger people we both liked this man and also wondered why he still attended races with us kids. Well, today I am THAT OLDER man going to races but some things have changed.
A lot of the people racing with you are older people still playing with kids toys. Enjoy each and every time you get to pick up a controller and live that dream, cherish each and every time you get to interact with these peers, friends and competitors because the memories that we have made, will make and will continue to make will be valuable to us all.

Every time I get to a track I see my competitors working from their pit boxes attempting to be as fast as possible but when I look a little harder I sometimes see that shadowy image of friends and competitors of the past who still seem attached to their pit box looking at me with that friendly competitive smile that says. Get your car right so I can beat you at your best.
