New addition to the man-cave - Finished!

Postby MoparGreg » Fri Jun 14, 2013 4:26 pm

So after Jeremys Miailbox project I thought I would share my latest. I guess you can call me old-school as I still listen to music on a record player. I dont expect many people to understand but if you are into Vinyl you will know what I mean. Listening to music on vinyl is the ultimate! Anyway I have been buying records for about 25years now, slowly 1 here & there. I have gotten to the stage where I have some records shoved in all spare spaces around the house. So it was about time to fix this. I looked around at different bookshelves but there was nothing I liked.

So I decided to build my own that will house all my records, my turntable & amp. So here it is. I just made it up as I went. 3 rows of records plus a small shelf for my amp & my iPod. The turntable will sit on top & any current playing vinyl will sit in the dividers on top. I used some Fijian Cedar ply wood. To make this I used 1xsheet of 19mm, 1/2 a sheet of 12mm & 1/2 a sheet of 6mm to build it. This timber is beautiful, awesome grain. Today I have some decorative strips to glue on the ends to cover the ends showing the ply. After that I am staining it to match our teak furniture, then probably rub in some Danish oil.

So these shelves are right beside my track so I can listen to tunes whilst working or running cars. In saying that my new shelves are covered in teddybears & barbie dolls. My daughters thanked me for building them a dolls house. They have been plying in it all week. I just hope I can reclaim it back!

So does anyone else still play Vinyl? Turntables live on!

Nice work Greg.

Not much vinyl in my collection these days. Lost most of my collection when my marriage split. Any replacement purchases have been on CD just due to portability. But I do miss the warmth of analogue. Vinyl records fed through valve amplifier. Nothing beats it for richness.

I do still have some remnants of my former collection. Oddly enough though the ex took most of my sound equipment he left behind my grammaphone and 78s.

Thanks for the comments. Any woodworking guru's in the house? I need to putty up the holes. As mentioned ill be staining the wood. Do you use putty of the color it is now or the colour it is going to be after it is stained. ie Does the stain color the putty?

Love the woodwork and the cabinet design. What are you playing them on?

I have about 300 albums, kind of a combination of mine, my late brother, mom & dad, grandparents. Also have reel to reel, 8 tracks (kids ask your parents....better yet, your grandparents), cassettes and, of course CDs. Most of my system dates from the mid 70s: Kenwood KR3600 reciever, Kenwood programable turntable, Sony 5" reel to reel, Realistic 8 track recorder/player, Realistic triple 8 track changer, Kenwood dual cassette deck, Aiwa single CD player, 2 Technics linear phase speakers and 2 Pioneer ducted bass speakers.....plus about 600 miles of wire to connect it all!

I actually wrote this twice, but lost it somehow because another post came in ahead of me... don't ask, I don't know.

Anyway, here's the short version. First, that looks very nice, and if this is not something you do very often, you may want to look for something called "veneer tape", which is ironed onto the edges to hide the laminations. But then, that's a really good job, so maybe you know all about that, and this isn't your first time out.

I am about to have to do something similar. We had a popped pipe a few weeks ago, and all the cabinets over there were wrecked. There are over 1130 albums (I still have everything back to 1962), who knows how many cassettes and CDs, but I didn't keep the 8-tracks! They all lived in the floorboards of the Dodge anyway.

The stereo is an old Dual (yes, the best I ever saw), and a Technics dual Cassette deck, stacked on a Technics CD changer. But the receiver is the star of the group. Its a 1972 Radio Shack (made by Fisher), STA2000- 100 true watts per channel, and the power section is all vacuum tubes ("valves" for Brit-speak). It toggles eight components, with ins and outs for all, and can drive eight speakers (I never had more than four), in two choirs (yes, they used to call it that when you had A and B separate stereo speakers with dual controls for each). When I have the house to myself, I crank up everything from Freddy and the Dreamers to the Kinks, the Stones, Canned Heat, Moody Blues, and everything Led Zepplin ever did- then hours of the London Philharmonic, Van Cliburn, D'Oly Carte, and so on. But the real fun is dragging out the Dillards, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe and all the boys. I'm all over the map. I even collect circus music, and Gypsy Guitar Jazz. I'm so indecisive.

Are you now addicted to woodworking, too? You are a fine fanatic about slot cars- finest kind. PM me if you want woodworking info- I've been doing it for around 40 years or so.

Thanks for the replies. Rob I think Im just addicted to making stuff. I just really enjoy it. Ive done alot of work with wood over the years, made various things. Last year I made a cubby house for the kids out of all left over & recycled timber from my house renovations I did. My friends thought I was mad, just buy one they told me. Instead I spent the weekend building the cubby out of all odd sizes of timber. It turned out great & the whole family helped, the kids & wife & we all had a blast. Just making it up as we went. Im about to make my own doors for our builtin wardrobe, yeah I can buy them but wheres the fun in that!

ANyway back to vinyl. My turntable is by CEC. Its a pretty good model. CEC makes most of the big names turntables. Its probably 1980s I suppose. I upgraded the cartridge to a very nice Shure cartridge & it sounds very nice. Pity the price tag on the cartridge wasnt nice! My amp is average & am about to upgrade to a nice Rotel I think. My setup is probably pretty average but it does the job nicely. It matches the style of music that I play. Ill photo everything once its all complete. Music Im all over the place as well Like Rob. I listen to anything from 50's/60's Rock-n-roll - Bill Haley, Chuck Berry etc to Old School punk - Ramones etc to modern punk - Bouncing Souls etc, to Old Jazz - Miles Davis, Louie Armstrong, a bit of modern alternative rock - Black Keys etc, Rockabilly - Stray Cats etc then theres The Beatles, the best band of all time! So yeah Im out there, I just love music!

I have a large MP3 collection that I play through the system on an ipod. The ipod is on when Im working & the turntable is on when Im just listening to or working on cars. I dont really have that many records, wish I had more. I sold off about 500 many years ago, left over from my DJ days. A bit of trivia I was a pretty well known DJ in the 90's.

Oh yeah Rob the vaneer tape. The wood store I purchase the Ply wood from said that the tape is not available for the ply I purchased. I purchased Fijian Cedar as I wanted it to match our 50's teak furniture & its a close match. I could of chosen a tape that was close but he recommend with the kids to use some thin moulding as the tape is quite delicate & easily chipped. The moulding is more hard wearing.

One last thing Rob, We need to see a photo of your circus music collection :)

Its kinda self-serving. Many years ago, I filled in for a total stranger who was a friend's cousin, and I had such a good time I keep the memory around. There's a whole code to circus music, ya know. If you ever hear "The Stars and Stripes Forever" at an American circus, get out! It tells the performers that there is a fire and they have to save the animals and their own circus butts. Other pieces are code for who's performing at the time, when to move equipment, all kinds of stuff.

As far as your wood filler question goes, You can buy stainable wood filler at your harware store. we use it in the shop I work at and it seems to do all right. Test it with some scrap first. Also, as for staining I prefer the Minwax brand for most things. Its easy to use. Depending on what grit sand paper you used to sand your cabinet will determine a lot of your stain color. The finer the grit the lighter the stain when you wipe it. Another little trick is to wipe the area to be staind with a lightly damp cloth just before staining. It helps open the pores in the wood.

I stopped using Minwax years ago, but only because I lived where it was hard to get a decent selection. I use Zar now, and its very very good. Minwax does make a product I use often, though. They have a pre-stain wood conditioner for soft woods that is excellent, and I don't have to bother with mixing some up myself. Best of all, it is very consistent, so that little routine nothing step, that is vital to good staining, is perfect every time.

It does suck that you can't buy any cabinets specifically made for holding LP's. I went through a similar search about a year and a half ago and just settled on a wicker basket on the floor. Granted it's a big basket, but I've already got it filled and am at the point where I have to subtract whenever I want to buy a new/old album. I'd build if I had the know-how, but I don't. It certainly looks like you do. That cabinet looks fantastic!

Ok this project is done. :) Sweet. I have to say Im pretty stoked with the outcome. When I first planned on building this I had no idea the finished product would look like this. Originally I had planned to just build something out of recycled timber or just some pine. I even thought about buying something from Ikea.

So this is made from Fijian Plywood. I added on the trimming. I decided to go with thin trim rather than the stuff on the roll. Mainly because of the kids & Ive heard that the tape is quite fragile. The trim was some Tasmanian Oak. I rubbed in 2 coats of golden teak stain(oil based). I played around with the stain as I wanted a bit more red in it to match our darker teak furniture. I couldnt get it quite right & the stain is very expensive to buy heaps of different ones so I just went with the golden teak right out of the jar. I wish it was a bit darker but Im super happy with it anyway. Then rubbed & burnished in 3 coats of Danish oil. I really was suprised with the shine that came of it after 3 coats of oil.

Here it is empty -

Im buying a new amplifier in a few weeks as the one in the photos is pretty old & not to fantastic. I have some more records to go in there as I have a load of Beatles records I need to pickup from my parents. They will probably fill up a whole divider. Anyway Thanks for looking. Now time to get back into building some new slot cars.
