I bought a heavy duty plastic tackle box at Wallyworld. Its green & gray holds 8-9 cars easily using the 2 shelves & fits all the tools too. I took out the 2 center divider trays & made 2 flat trays to replace them still leaving the top tray for tools, it has 2 side fold out compartments & a large opening top section plus room on the side top for 2 more cars, it measures 22'' wide x 12'' deep & 12'' tall & it works great!!!! cost was around 39 buckeroos, check it out when you can it's made by Plano model #732 light weight & very durable. Try & post a pic when I can.

MG, I think the one you are referring ot is the one that people were finding at Aaron Brothers, the framing people, in their art supply department. Can't find a link right now, but they were very nice for a few cars at a time.

There's some things you need to know about that Harbor Freight link. I have nine of these boxes. They are copies of the famous machinist's boxes from 100 years ago (still being made, by the way- Gestner http://www.mscdirect.com/ProductCompari ... 7,89759948 $2400), and the wood appears to be light teak. The floors are all cardboard, flocked with Kelly green fuzz. I have two of the big ones that this link goes to, four of the middle size, two of the smalls, and one very small, a little bigger than a shoebox. They do not have enough drawer depth for most slot cars. The middle size barely has enough room for slot cars in the drawers. They get heavy fast if you use them for what they are intended, and the cardboard floors won't last a day with machinist's bits, cutters, mill ends, calipers, rests, etc, etc, etc. But I will say, as a stationary tool box for slot car tools, they are hard to beat. I use one of the big ones (the link goes to it), for most of my slot car hand tools, lubricants, tiny detail parts, and stuff. I also have to say that when I bought mine, the big ones were $40, the middle ones were $25, and the small ones $10. My smallest one was bought later. Mine came from a woodworking tools catalog online, and that outfit was bought by another woodworking outfit. It was only about 7 years ago, so HF is screwing people with that claim of retail price. It is doubtful that the sale price in the link is as cheap as you can get them.

There are several very fine wood boxes made by slot car guys. They are quite easy to build, and I would be surpised if there weren't some plans out there on the net. But lots of guys make them, and some of them are fantastic. One of our guys builds them from time to time, and his are very similar to one of the ones I have seen Harry use in pictures on HRW. You should have no trouble finding them for $100 or less, even $50 for small ones.

The wooden boxes always look fabulous and sturdy. But surely by the time they are full they must be heavy enought to require their own motor.

The better ones don't. The better ones are made from 1/8 inch (its produced in metric sizes, so close to 3mm-3.5mm), okoume plywood, very light and very stiff. I have made kayaks on commission from it, and its neat stuff, and cheap. I like it. Most of the boxes in that google image file could be made from less than one sheet of the stuff, and weigh around a pound (454 grams) or a bit more. Strong stuff. Makes me wonder why we have used Philippine mahogany for years. Okoume is actually prettier, too, and takes paint better. The whiter boxes in the pictures are probably okoume.

Used the Plano case ( bottom picture in previous post) for quite a few years, works great, two drawers will store 10-12 cars, 1 drawer with dividers for parts and then the top deep section for tools, tire tubes, controller etc... I highly recommend this box. I doubt you can go wrong with it for the price.

That's the Plano I have several of for HO cars. You can get packs of trays to have on hand, too. I have a stack of them, so I can carry the cars I will want for a particular track. Then, there weren't any tracks anymore! Oh well. For HO at least, they are by far the best I've had. I may experiment with it after the HOs are gone, I like them so much.
