Thanks for posting that, Tony. Really cool that she'd speak up, but it's a shame about Fred's condition.

Brings tears to my eyes. Fred Lorenzen was a hero to us boys in the neighborhood. The parents used to take turns having us all over to watch the races on TV because we yelled and screamed so loud no one house could handle it two weeks in a row. We had other favorites, but Lorenezen was so spectacular, he got most of our yelling and screaming, unless someone got in his way, and then we yelled and screamed at him until Lorenzen passed him.

great read !! You know even though Dale Jr. retracted some on his post race comments, It is still a important stand he has taken. It`s no secret that Dale Sr. had much influence on NCAR, and Bill F. Sr. had many 1 on 1s with him to get his opinions. So I don`t think it would take long for Jr. "most popular for how many years" to send a point home down to the NCAR kids that have tried to take over this empire.

On Wind Tunnel last night, Dave, Jeff Gordon, and Dr. Steve Olvey discussed all this, including a good mention of "The Letter".
It is quietly been discussed among the racing medical people that #3 died in 2001 not because of the Daytona accident but more from the accident finalizing long term damage from concussions and neck injuries Dale suffered during his career.
This is not endemic to NASCAR, but all of racing.
2 schools of thought: Strict medical checks and follow up after accidents, or realizing drivers know the risks, take precautions, and make career decisions accordingly.
Now, excuse me. It's time for my meds.

The Lorenzen family were good people. Though I did not hang out with Fred when I was a kid,
my friends and I usually ended up at their Shell station with our go-carts looking for gas or help
with some problem. Back then the intersection of IL Rt-83 and RT-64 was not so busy and we
could drive our carts to the station. We were very lucky to have gas station owners and their
employees who were eager to help us out, something you don't see so often in present times.

Great read. Fred was one of my heroes "back then", too.
Jesla:
Wow. What makes you think this? Have you read something somewhere that make's Dale Jr.'s condition sound more ominous than on the surface?
